Chapter 7 - The Father's Sins

By Friday afternoon, the story had broken across every national news network. The headlines were savage, relentless, stripping the polished facade from the Vance dynasty: *BOSTON HEIRESS ATTEMPTS MATRICIDAL COVER-UP; FAKE PREGNANCY TRUST FRAUD UNRAVELED; ARISTOCRATIC FAMILY ACCUSED OF TERMINATING DAUGHTER’S UNBORN CHILD.*

I was resting in my hospital bed when the heavy oak door of the room was shoved open. Two uniformed Boston police officers immediately moved to block the entrance, handguns unholstered at their hips.

"Let me see my daughter!" a booming, desperate voice demanded from the hallway.

It was Arthur Vance.

He looked completely undone. His bespoke Italian suit was rumpled, his silk tie crooked, his silver hair unkempt. The imposing patriarch who had ruled over Boston real estate boards for thirty years looked like an old, hunted animal cornered in an alleyway.

"Step back, Mr. Vance," the lead officer commanded, his hand firm on Arthur's chest. "You are under a temporary restraining order issued by Judge Morrison. One more step and you're in cuffs."

"Elizabeth! Lizzie, please!" Arthur cried, peering past the officer's wide shoulders, his eyes locking onto mine. "You have to tell the district attorney to drop the charges against your mother! This is a catastrophic misunderstanding! The press is devouring us! The bank called in the bridge loans this morning—they've frozen every operating account!"

Daniel rose from his chair, his tall frame trembling with absolute, unrestrained hatred. "Get out of here, Arthur, before I break your jaw."

"Shut up, Daniel! You're an outsider! You don't understand what’s at stake!" Arthur pleaded, ignoring Daniel completely, his bloodshot eyes fixed on me. "Lizzie, your mother is frail. She cannot survive the women’s facility in Framingham. She did what she did out of love for this family! She wanted to protect our legacy! If the trust funds don't clear by next Friday, the entire Vance estate goes into bankruptcy liquidation! Everything your grandfather built—the houses, the collections, the name—it all vanishes!"

I stared at the man who had raised me, the man who had walked me down the aisle, the man who had held my hand when I was a little girl with scraped knees.

"Did you know about the Cloprostenol, Father?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it cut through the room like a scalpel.

Arthur froze. His lips parted, but no sound came out for three agonizing seconds.

"I... I knew Martha had a plan to ensure Chloe had the first child," he whispered, his eyes dropping to the polished linoleum floor, unable to bear my gaze. "I didn't ask for details, Elizabeth. In business, you don't ask how the sausage is made! Martha handled the domestic matters! She told me you would have other children later—that you were young, resilient, that you would bounce back! She said it was just a minor setback for you, but an existential salvation for us!"

"A minor setback?" Daniel roared, lunging forward, but the second police officer caught Daniel by the arm, holding him back. "You poisoned your own grandchild! You killed her baby for a bank loan!"

"We were drowning!" Arthur screamed, his composure shattering into hysterical sobbing. "I owed eighteen million dollars to private creditors in New York! Dangerous people, Lizzie! If I don't pay them by November, they won't just take the house—they will put a bullet through my skull! Your mother was trying to save my life!"

"Then you should have died, Arthur," I said, every ounce of filial affection burning away into cold ash. "Officer, arrest him. He just confessed to knowledge of the conspiracy."

The lead officer didn't hesitate. He spun Arthur around, slamming the patriarch’s face against the corridor wall, the sharp *click-clack* of ratcheting handcuffs echoing through the ward. Arthur screamed profanities, cursing my name, cursing Daniel, cursing his father’s will, until his pathetic cries faded down the elevator shaft.
