Chapter 46 - The Dead Hand Protocol

My breath caught in my throat. "The baby?"

Daniel brought the cylinder closer to the child. Gently, he pressed the newborn's tiny heel against the circular glass plate on the cylinder's base.

A faint blue laser scanned the skin. For a second, nothing happened. Then, a mechanical click echoed inside the metal casing. The cylinder twisted open with a soft hiss of escaping nitrogen gas, splitting into three distinct sections.

Inside lay a high-density, air-gapped cryptographic storage drive, a set of engraved brass keys, and a handwritten letter folded on parchment paper, penned in Arthur Vance’s unmistakable, spidery handwriting.

I unfolded the letter with trembling hands:

*Elizabeth,*

*If you are reading this, Fort Vance is at the bottom of the Atlantic, and I have paid my long-overdue debt to the world. Do not mourn me; I was the architect of your misery, the man who let Victoria’s venom infect everything we built.*

*You believe this war was about the estate. It was not. The sixty million dollars in the family trusts was a distraction, a decoy thrown to the wolves—to Victoria, to Chloe, and to Campbell. The true Vance legacy is not money. It is the Sovereign Registry.*

*Beneath the historic Vance townhouse on Beacon Hill in Boston lies the Old Vault—built before the Civil War. Inside that vault is the ledger containing sixty years of systemic extortion, judicial blackmail, and political puppetry. It is the weapon Campbell intended to use to establish complete immunity across three states. He who holds the Registry holds the keys to the eastern seaboard.*

*Do not run. If you run, Campbell’s hidden syndicate will hunt you until the day you die. Use the enclosed keys. Go to Boston. Unlock the Old Vault, burn the syndicate to the ground, and reclaim what belongs to your son.*

*Forgive me if you can.*

*Arthur.*

Daniel plugged the storage drive into Declan's battery-operated field terminal. The screen blinked alive, illuminating the dark room with cascading green code.

"Arthur wasn't lying," Daniel said, his eyes widening as thousands of encrypted files resolved into readable indexes. "It’s all here. Bank account routings, secret offshore shell companies, judicial bribes... and an arrest warrant bypass that Campbell had signed in blank by federal judges."

Suddenly, the ham radio on the shelf crackled to life with static.

A distorted voice broke through the speaker: *"...All units, this is regional dispatch. State police and federal marshals have issued an amber alert and an armed-and-dangerous warrant for Detective Daniel Burke and Elizabeth Vance. Suspects are wanted in connection with the catastrophic demolition of Fort Vance and multiple homicides. Shoot on sight authorized under Homeland Security Directive..."*

Daniel stared at the radio, his jaw hardening into granite. "Campbell's allies in the Department of Justice just made their move. We aren't victims anymore. In the eyes of the law, Elizabeth... we’re terrorists."
