Chapter 51 - The Final Sovereign Clause

"Over my dead body," I said, my voice dropping to a deathly whisper.

"That can be arranged instantly," Campbell sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Beside me, Daniel stirred through his agony. With his uninjured hand, he covertly reached beneath his rain slicker, sliding Arthur's brass keys across the slick floor toward my boot.

*The master override.*

"You think you won, Campbell?" I said, stalling, my heartbeat drumming like a war drum in my ears. "The moment this system is unlocked, Arthur’s automated protocols broadcast the registry to every major news outlet, the Department of Justice, and the international courts. You won't be an emperor. You'll be a fugitive in an orange jumpsuit."

"Nobody broadcasts anything until I enter the master cipher," Campbell rasped, stepping within arm’s reach, reaching his bloody hand down toward the baby's blanket. "Now give him to me!"

At that exact second, Daniel kicked the leg of the mahogany desk with all the strength left in his body, sending a heavy bronze statue crashing toward Campbell’s shattered knee.

Campbell shrieked in agony as his broken leg buckled, his shot discharging harmlessly into the ceiling.

I lunged forward, sweeping the brass keys into my hand and slamming them into the manual override slot beneath the biometric terminal. Simultaneously, I pressed my baby’s tiny thumb against the glowing scanner.

The terminal flashed bright crimson, and a synthesized voice resonated throughout the subterranean vault:

**[BIOMETRIC RECOGNITION CONFIRMED: HEIR 01. LIVING WILL PROTOCOL INITIATED.]**

**[AUTHORITY RECLASSIFICATION: ALL SOVEREIGN ASSETS REVOKED.]**

**[TRANSFERRING EXCLUSIVE GUARDIANSHIP AND TRUST CONVEYANCE TO: ELIZABETH VANCE.]**

Campbell, crawling on the floor, let out a primal scream of rage, raising his pistol toward my chest.

Before he could pull the trigger, the reinforced blast doors behind the descending staircase suddenly slammed shut with a deafening hydraulic boom. The ceiling vents sealed.

A secondary voice—cold, mechanical, and unfamiliar—echoed from the vault's central intercom system, cutting through Campbell’s screams:

**[ATTENTION: UNAUTHORIZED SYSTEM INTRUSION DETECTED AT PRIMARY GATEWAY. REMOTE OVERRIDE ENGAGED BY CONTINGENCY HOLDER THREE.]**

Campbell froze, his pistol lowering slightly, his burned face draining of what little color remained. "Contingency Three? No... that's impossible. She died twenty years ago..."

On the massive monitor wall behind the mahogany desk, a live video feed flickered to life.

The screen did not show a news broadcast. It showed an austere, clinical room somewhere deep underground, filled with medical monitors and life-support machines. Sitting in a high-backed wheelchair, watching us through a high-definition lens, was an elderly woman whose cold, piercing green eyes mirrored my own.

A woman who had supposedly been buried in the family crypt before I was even born.

"Hello, Elizabeth," the woman on the screen spoke, her voice sending a chill down my spine that eclipsed the freezing Atlantic waters. "You have your father’s stubbornness. But you have brought my grandson home just in time for the real harvest."

Behind her in the video frame, the shadows shifted, revealing armed men in dark tactical gear bearing the insignia not of the Vance family, but of an organization far larger.

A digitized countdown on the vault terminal began ticking down from sixty seconds.
