Chapter 53 - The Subterranean Vein

The cold air of the Boston underground hit us like a physical blow. The air tasted of century-old dust, rusted iron, and stagnant river water.

Behind us, a muffled concussive roar shook the bedrock. The reinforced blast doors of the vault groaned and warped under the sheer pressure of the thermite explosion, sealing Campbell and the family's paper empire beneath thousands of tons of superheated slag.

"Keep moving," Miller wheezed, his flashlight beam cutting through the impenetrable gloom of the decommissioned trolley line. His shoulder was soaked in blood where his earlier wound had reopened, but his grip on his weapon remained steady. "That woman... Eleanor. Her tactical team was already in the auxiliary shaft when the video feed connected. They won't wait for the dust to clear."

"She’s my grandmother," I whispered, the words tasting like poison on my tongue. "My father told me she died of degenerative organ failure when I was five years old. He wept at her funeral."

"Your father was a middleman," Miller said, scanning the dark tunnel ahead where the rusted tracks converged into a shadowed fork. "The files we pulled from the harbor yacht mentioned an offshore medical trust—the Aegis Vanguard Foundation. It wasn't founded by your father or Campbell. It was established in 1974 under Eleanor’s maiden name."

Leo stirred against my chest, letting out a soft, whimpering cry. I gently rocked him, pressing my lips to his warm forehead, terrified that the acoustics of the brick-lined tunnel would amplify his voice to the hunters above.

"Why Leo?" I asked, my voice trembling with cold fury. "Why did my mother push me off that balcony? Why did Chloe drink that toast? If Eleanor is alive and holds all the sovereign power, why did they need my child dead?"

"They didn't want him dead, Elizabeth," Miller said grimly, stopping near an iron maintenance ladder leading upward into the street-level drainage grid. "They wanted him *unregistered*. If you died on that marble patio, Leo would have been extracted by the private trauma team your mother had waiting on the perimeter. Officially, a tragic miscarriage. Unofficially, the child disappears into Eleanor’s private medical compound with zero legal existence."

Before I could process the monstrous weight of his words, the sharp clatter of tactical boots echoed from the darkness behind us.

A high-intensity spotlight cut through the mist, illuminating our silhouettes against the damp brick wall.

"Drop the weapon and step away from the child!" a distorted voice commanded through a tactical megaphone. "Contingency Protocol 33 is active. Lethal force authorized for the escorts. The asset must remain intact."

Miller didn't waste breath arguing. He grabbed the rungs of the maintenance ladder with one hand and shoved me upward. "Climb, Elizabeth! Get to the surface!"

May you like

"Miller, no!"

"Go! I’m right behind you!" he barked, pivoting and dropping into a crouch at the base of the shaft, leveling his weapon into the blinding beam of the approaching strike team.
