Chapter 27 - The Autopsy of an Empire

Forty-eight hours later, the fourth-floor conference room of the United States Attorney’s Office in Manhattan was buried under three decades of Vance corporate ledgers.

I sat in an iron-framed wheelchair, a sterile IV line still taped to the back of my hand, pumping antibiotics into my blood to combat the sepsis from the bunker dust. Across the long oak table, three federal prosecutors, four forensic accountants, and two FBI criminal division chiefs were staring at the open binders like priests examining an open portal to hell.

Daniel stood by the window, his arm in a sling, an unlit cigarette tucked behind his ear. His badge and service weapon had been temporarily surrendered for forensic ballistics review, but nobody dared ask him to leave the room.

"The scope of this is unprecedented," Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Thorne said, adjusting his glasses as he turned a page in the St. Jude's ledger. "Harold Vogel wasn't just running a rogue clinic. He was the chief medical officer for a private biotech shell corporation called Prometheus Life Systems, funded entirely through non-taxable offshore endowments established by Arthur Vance Senior in 1994."

"What about the surrogate mothers?" I asked, my voice flat, hollowed out by two days of non-stop depositions.

"Over thirty women," Thorne replied quietly. "All of them chosen from the extended Vance family orbit or private employees within Vance Enterprises. Chloe was simply the latest. Her pregnancy was real, Elizabeth. But the fetus she was carrying... it was engineered using genetic material harvested from Arthur Senior before his death, combined with an undisclosed donor egg."

"And the toast?" Daniel asked from the window, his voice dangerously low. "The party at the penthouse?"

"A trigger event," Thorne said, pointing to a transcript of Chloe’s taped confession from federal custody. "Chloe was terrified. She discovered two weeks prior to the shower that the moment she gave birth via Caesarean, Sterling had arranged for her to suffer a fatal amniotic fluid embolism on the operating table. She was never meant to raise that child. She toasted to your baby's death because she knew your pregnancy meant her child was obsolete—and that her execution date had been moved up."

"And Eleanor?" I whispered. "My mother?"

Thorne paused, exchanging a grave look with the senior FBI agent beside him.

"Eleanor isn't talking," the agent said. "She's being held under suicide watch at the forensic psychiatric facility in Fishkill. But she left a safety deposit box at JP Morgan. It was opened this morning under federal warrant."

The agent pushed a yellow manila envelope across the table.

"You're going to want to look at this alone, Elizabeth."
