Chapter 24 - The Cold Room

We stepped through the warped iron threshold into a room that looked less like a tomb and more like a high-grade clandestine medical clinic from the late 1990s.
Stainless steel tables stood in parallel lines beneath flickering fluorescent tubes. Industrial-grade refrigeration units hummed along the curved brick walls, their digital temperature displays glowing a sinister amber: *–20°C*. Along the far wall were rows of heavy fireproof filing cabinets and three large, stainless-steel cryo-containment dewars, their pressure valves leaking thin trails of liquid nitrogen vapor onto the floor.
"What is this place?" I whispered, my voice trembling as a cold dread settled over my heart.
"Arthur Senior’s private archive," Martha said, walking slowly toward one of the freezers, her fingers trailing lovingly across the frosted steel. "My father was obsessed with longevity. But more than that, he was obsessed with control. He didn't trust modern banks, modern hospitals, or the legal system. He knew everyone had a price, so he built his own sanctuary."
Daniel moved past her, his weapon low but ready, and pulled open the unlocked top drawer of the nearest file cabinet. Inside were dozens of thick, leather-bound binders, each stamped with a private patient ID and a Vance corporate seal.
He pulled one at random and flipped it open. I leaned over his shoulder, reading the crisp medical typography.
*Subject: Vance, Chloe. Intake: St. Jude’s Fertility Clinic. Procedure: In vitro fertilization via non-disclosed donor genetic profile (Vance Lineage Protocol).*
"Chloe wasn't just using an anonymous surrogate service," I said, the realization hitting me like physical blow. "They implanted her with Arthur Senior’s preserved genetic material."
"Not just Chloe," Martha whispered, turning around, her face illuminated by the harsh white light of the freezer. Her smile was gone, replaced by a ghastly, hollow bitterness. "Every grandchild. Every attempt. My father had his gametes frozen before his first stroke. He drafted the Vance Bloodline Clause to ensure that only a child carrying his direct, uncorrupted genetic sequence could inherit the primary trust."
"And my baby?" I asked, my voice cracking, my hands instinctively pressing against my flat, hollow belly where my child had lived just days before. "The child my mother pushed down the stairs to kill?"
May you like
Martha looked at me with genuine, chilling pity. "Your baby wasn't fathered by your fiancé, Elizabeth. You were drugged during your routine hysteroscopy at St. Jude’s three months before your wedding. Sterling and Eleanor made sure of it. You were carrying Arthur Senior’s direct clone-line child."
