Chapter 26 - Daylight and Cuffs

The thunder of heavy hydraulic rescue equipment began vibrating through the stone ceiling ten minutes later.
Daniel had Sterling double-cuffed with heavy zip-ties found in the tool chest, while I sat beside Martha’s cooling body, clutching the leather-bound binder labeled *Intake 104*. My hands were shaking so hard the pages rattled like dried leaves.
Every word in that file was an indictment of my entire life.
The signatures. The blood-panel results. The detailed logs signed by Dr. Harold Vogel, the director of St. Jude’s private fertility wing. The confirmation that the fall from the balcony had indeed severed the uterine lining—but more importantly, that the fetal tissue samples had been marked for immediate extraction by Vogel’s surgical team before the hospital had even notified me of the miscarriage.
They hadn't just tried to kill my baby. They had intended to harvest it.
"Breach! Federal agents, clear the room!"
The iron door was blown backward with a hydraulic ram. A dozen heavily armed SWAT officers in tactical armor flooded the underground laboratory, assault lights blinding the dim room, red laser sights painting the walls.
"Down! Hands where we can see them!"
"Officer down! Detective Daniel Vance, Metro Homicide!" Daniel yelled, holding his badge high above his head while keeping his boot pressed against Raymond Sterling’s shoulder. "Suspect is Raymond Sterling, wanted for murder, conspiracy, and federal wire fraud! Civilian secure!"
The tactical team moved with surgical precision. Sterling was hauled to his feet, screaming obscenities through a mouthful of chemical soot, while medics rushed past him to evaluate Martha. After ten seconds, the lead paramedic looked up at the tactical commander and shook his head.
"Code black on the female. Massive trauma, no pulse."
Daniel walked over to me, kneeling in the dirt. He gently placed his jacket around my shoulders, shielding me from the biting subterranean chill.
"It's over, Elizabeth," he whispered, his eyes dark with a mixture of exhaustion and fury. "The state police have Vogel in custody at the border. Chloe has already surrendered to federal agents in New York. The entire operation is dismantled."
I looked down at the charred, open folder in my lap, reading the final paragraph written in Arthur Senior’s own elegant, spidery handwriting at the bottom of the last page.
*In the event of institutional compromise, all biological assets and corporate controls revert immediately to Project Prometheus, Account 88-Zurich.*

"It's not over, Daniel," I said, my voice ice-cold, devoid of any tears. "Arthur Vance didn't build this to die with him. He built a machine. And we haven't found the engineer yet."
