Chapter 43 - The Resuscitation

The cabin of Declan’s boat smelled of diesel, copper, and salt.
I stripped the damp outer layers from the baby, wrapping him in dry wool blankets from the emergency locker. His skin was pale, his lips tinged blue from the ambient freeze of the storm, but his heart beat furiously against his tiny ribs. I held him flush against my bare chest, sharing my body heat, weeping silent tears that mixed with the sea salt on my cheeks.
Daniel sat slumped against the navigation console, clutching his cracked ribs. His face was a map of contusions, his knuckle skin shredded from his brawl with Judge Campbell. Declan was at the helm, his eyes locked on the radar screen as rain lashed the reinforced windshield.
"We aren't clear," Declan said, his voice flat with cold dread. He tapped the glowing green display. "Look at the perimeter sweep."
Three blips were moving rapidly across the outer edge of the radar, converging on our heading from the northwest.
"Coast Guard?" I asked, looking up, my voice hoarse.
"No," Declan replied, checking the transponder frequencies. "No distress response, no rescue protocol broadcast. These are deep-hull tactical interceptors. Sovereign Rock private security vessels. Campbell’s clean-up crew had secondary orders. If the fort went dark, nobody was supposed to reach the mainland alive."
Daniel struggled to his feet, grimacing as he grabbed the cabin's grab-bar. He peered over Declan’s shoulder. "They're faster than us. This trawler was built for stealth, not a high-speed sprint across sixty miles of open water."
"Then we don't sprint," Declan said, reaching into the console and pulling out a heavy, waterproof cylinder stamped with the Vance heraldic crest. "Arthur didn't just leave documents at the fort. When we were rigging the lower docks before the assault, he slipped this into my vest. He told me that if Campbell turned on him, this was the only leverage left in the western hemisphere."
I looked at the heavy titanium cylinder. "What is it?"
"The Master Key," Daniel whispered, recognizing the cryptographic seal. "It’s Arthur's digital dead-man's switch. Every bribe, every shadow account, every politician Campbell owned, and every biometric bypass for the Vance family trust."

"Arthur knew he wouldn't survive the night," I said, remembering the cold certainty in the old patriarch's eyes before the crane collapsed. "He traded his life to bury the dynasty—and Campbell with it."
"Campbell might be at the bottom of the shelf," Daniel warned, loading a fresh magazine into his sidearm with a metallic snap, "but the men steering those three interceptors are hunting fifty million dollars in bounty money. If they catch us in international waters, there won't even be bodies left to wash ashore."
