Chapter 33 - The Offshore Leviathan

They kept us in the harbor master's concrete outpost under armed guard for two hours while high-ranking officials engaged in muted, furious shouting matches over satellite phones in the next room. Daniel sat beside me on a steel bench, using a dry towel from an emergency kit to wipe the saltwater and dried blood from my face.
"They're blocking the Coast Guard," Daniel murmured under his breath, leaning close so the two federal guards posted at the door couldn't hear. "The Coast Guard had an intercept vector fifteen miles off Cape Ann. But five minutes ago, an order came down from the Department of Transportation citing civilian maritime safety in severe storm conditions. Arthur didn't just escape, Elizabeth. He had the government clear a shipping corridor for him."
"How can one dead man have this much power?" I whispered, my voice trembling with exhaustion and primal fury. "My mother pushed me off a balcony to protect this. My sister drank to my baby's death. And Arthur... Arthur was pulling the strings from beyond the grave."
"Because he didn't just own real estate and hospitals," Daniel replied grimly. "Arthur Vance built the private data-storage architectures for the Eastern Seaboard's intelligence clearinghouses. He holds the digital skeleton keys to every offshore trust, every corrupt campaign contribution, every judge’s offshore holding in the Caymans. They can't arrest him without tearing down half of Washington and Wall Street."
The door swung open, and the lead FBI agent walked in, his phone pressed to his ear. He clicked it off, his jaw clenched tight. He looked at Daniel, then at me, his eyes betraying a mixture of disgust and defeat.
"Your material witness warrant was vacated twenty minutes ago," the agent said abruptly.
Daniel frowned, leaning forward. "By who?"
"The Attorney General's office," the agent replied. "The official narrative is being broadcast in forty-five minutes. A rogue private security contractor abducted Chloe Vance and the infant from the marina. Arthur Vance is still dead according to public record. If either of you speaks to the press about Arthur Vance being alive, you will be charged under the Federal Espionage Act for compromising sealed infrastructure files."
"You're letting him get away," I said, rising to my feet, the pain in my shattered ribs flaring white-hot. "He has an infant! He has a baby born from stolen genetic material in an illegal medical surrogate facility!"
"Mrs. Vance," the agent said coldly, "the maritime transponder of the vessel you saw vanished from satellite tracking ten miles east of Stellwagen Bank. That vessel doesn't exist on any registry. As far as the United States government is concerned, you were the victim of an elaborate hoax orchestrated by Harold Vogel before he blew his own brains out."
"And the body in the crypt?" Daniel challenged. "The DNA we pulled from the medical vault?"
The agent pulled an official document from his leather portfolio and dropped it on the steel table between us. It was a certified lab report from the State Medical Examiner's office, stamped with today's date.
*Result: Inconclusive. Biological samples compromised by heat and water exposure. Case closed.*

"They sanitized the state lab while we were driving here," Daniel realized, his voice trembling with venomous rage. "Arthur’s cleanup crew reached the evidence locker before the morning shift even clocked in."
"Get out of here, Detective," the agent warned quietly. "Take the girl and drive far away. Because the next time Arthur Vance decides to settle a family dispute, there won't be any federal agents in the middle to save you from the blast."
