Chapter 5 - Broken Bones and Buried Truths

Two days passed in the surgical trauma unit before the doctors permitted me to sit upright. The pain in my shattered wrist was a dull, thumping agony, but the bruised ribs made every inhalation feel like a serrated knife scraping against my lungs. Daniel never left my side. He slept in the uncomfortable vinyl armchair, his fingers linked through mine whenever the night terrors wrenched me awake.

On Thursday morning, the door to Room 412 opened, and an unfamiliar woman in a white coat entered, accompanied by Detective Miller. The badge clipped to her lapel identified her as Dr. Evelyn Reed, Chief of Forensic Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

"Elizabeth, Daniel, good morning," Dr. Reed said softly, drawing the privacy curtain around the bed. "I’ve been working alongside the police department on the biological evidence gathered from the Commonwealth Avenue residence, as well as the blood work we took from you upon admission."

"Is it about the veterinary drug?" I asked, my voice still hoarse from the intubation tube they had removed forty-eight hours prior.

"Partially," Dr. Reed said, pulling a stool beside the bed. "The Cloprostenol Sodium has completely cleared your system, though the trauma to your uterine lining from the abrupt detachment of the placenta was severe. With reconstructive surgery and time, you may still be able to conceive again in the future. The biological damage is not irreversible."

Daniel released a breath he had seemingly held for months, burying his face against the edge of the mattress. But Dr. Reed’s expression did not soften. She glanced back at Detective Miller, who closed the door securely.

"However," Dr. Reed continued, her voice measured and precise, "in reviewing the search warrant returns from your mother's private residence, the crime scene unit seized a locked medical refrigeration unit in Martha’s master dressing room. In that unit, we found five separate vials of human chorionic gonadotropin, high-dose progesterone injections, and three commercial silicone prosthetic maternity bellies."

I stared at her, uncomprehending. "Prosthetic bellies? For who?"

"For your sister, Chloe," Detective Miller said flatly.

The room spun. "What are you talking about? Chloe is eight months pregnant! I saw her. I touched her stomach at the shower. Her baby shower was three days ago!"

"Chloe Vance is not pregnant, Mrs. Vance," Dr. Reed stated calmly. "She has never been pregnant."

The words struck my consciousness like a physical blow. The memory of Chloe standing in her lilac silk gown, cradling her swollen abdomen, boasting about kicking rhythms and nursery themes, replayed in my mind like a grotesque pantomime.

"We took Chloe into custody on conspiracy to commit murder charges," Miller explained. "When an inmate is processed at South Bay, a mandatory medical intake screening is performed, including a urine and blood pregnancy panel. Chloe refused the test, claiming it violated her bodily autonomy. The court issued an emergency warrant for an involuntary blood draw and pelvic ultrasound."

"The results?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with disbelief.

"Her uterus is completely nulliparous," Dr. Reed answered. "She has elevated hormone levels solely because she has been administering daily subcutaneous injections of pregnancy hormones to mimic morning sickness, breast tenderness, and bloating. The belly she wore was a medical-grade silicone prosthesis weighted to match third-trimester fetal density, heated with internal warming coils to simulate living body temperature."

"Then... whose baby was going to be born?" I whispered, horror crawling beneath my skin like insects. "If the trust required a living child... where was the baby coming from?"

Miller’s face darkened, veins standing out against his temple. "That is the nightmare we uncovered at two o'clock this morning, Elizabeth. Your sister didn't just plan a fake pregnancy. She had already arranged for the delivery of an infant—a newborn purchased through an illegal black-market adoption ring operating out of a private clinic in upstate New York. And the surrogate carrying that infant had no idea who was really buying her child."
