Chapter 9 - Ava’s Custody

Seraphine was Ava’s biological mother.

That complicated everything.

Adrian could not simply declare she would never see her child again.

Child protection imposed an emergency safety plan.

Ava remained temporarily with Adrian.

Seraphine received no unsupervised contact pending investigation.

Supervised visits began later.

Adrian hated them.

Ava was an infant.

She did not understand betrayal.

She recognized her mother’s voice.

During first supervised visit, Ava settled immediately in Seraphine’s arms.

Adrian had to leave the observation room.

He cried in hallway.

How could someone endanger a child and still be loved by that child?

A social worker answered:

“Attachment does not certify safety.”

That sentence helped.

Seraphine loved Ava.

Perhaps deeply.

She still used her in a staged incident.

Love and safety were not synonyms.
