Chapter 8 - Seraphine’s Marriage

Seraphine had not married Adrian solely for money.

That would have been easier.

She loved him.

At least once.

She loved how gently he spoke to Milo.

She loved the house.

The travel.

The protection of being a Vale.

She also hated living inside Claire’s memory.

Claire’s photographs remained.

Claire’s trust paid for Milo’s future.

Claire’s family shares sat beyond Seraphine’s reach.

Every attorney still said:

“Claire intended…”

Seraphine began thinking the dead woman controlled the living.

Then Ava was born.

Seraphine looked at her newborn daughter and saw an imbalance.

Milo’s trust:

Almost twenty-five million.

Ava’s initial trust from Adrian:

Two million.

Adrian planned to equalize over time.

Seraphine did not believe him.

She asked:

“What if something happens to you?”

Adrian answered:

“The estate plan protects both kids.”

But not equally in every asset.

Claire’s money belonged to Milo.

It was never Ava’s.

Seraphine emotionally converted that legal fact into rejection.

Julian fed it.

“He’ll always be Claire’s child first.”

“Milo’s trust controls Harbor shares.”

“What does Ava get?”

Fear became resentment.

Resentment found opportunity.

No single conversation transformed Seraphine.

It happened in increments.

She began viewing Milo’s needs as expensive.

His therapies as “a lot.”

His accommodations as “special treatment.”

Then she discovered providers could invoice trust.

Her brother’s companies benefited.

A moral line moved.

Then moved again.

By the doghouse, she had convinced herself she was protecting Ava’s future.

While locking Ava beside the child she claimed was dangerous.

Contradiction did not stop her.
