Chapter 4 - What Milo Heard

Milo did not understand trust law.

He understood tone.

He remembered Julian coming to the house.

He remembered Seraphine closing doors.

He remembered his name.

And “baby.”

And “Friday.”

His speech therapist, Dr. Nina Patel, helped him tell the story without adults filling gaps.

Milo said:

“Uncle Julian say Milo go school-house.”

“School house?” Nina asked.

“Sleep there.”

“A place where you sleep?”

“Yes.”

“Did he say why?”

“Because baby scared.”

“Was Ava scared?”

“No.”

“What did Seraphine say?”

Milo looked down.

“She say we make video.”

“What video?”

“Baby cry. Milo hold.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

There had been video attempts.

Seraphine repeatedly asked Milo to hold Ava while she recorded.

At the time Adrian thought it was sweet.

Some clips existed on her phone.

In one, Ava fussed.

Seraphine said behind camera:

“Milo, careful!”

Milo was doing nothing unsafe.

In another:

“Don’t squeeze!”

His hands were correctly placed.

She was narrating danger into ordinary moments.

Creating evidence by commentary.

Adrian felt nauseated.

Nina continued gently.

“What happened before the doghouse?”

Milo said:

“Sera say hold Ava.”

“And then?”

“She say walk.”

“Where?”

“Dog house.”

“Why?”

“She say game.”

“Did you want to play?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Milo closed his eyes.

“She say if good brother, do it.”

Adrian looked away.

Not because he could not hear.

Because he could.

Milo continued:

“She say Daddy see Milo bad, Milo go away.”

That became the emotional center of everything.

Seraphine had used belonging as threat.

Milo already knew he was different.

He had heard strangers speak too slowly to him.

He had seen people stare.

He trusted home to be where difference did not become disqualification.

Seraphine turned that trust into leverage.
