Chapter 5 - The Deleted Messages

Seraphine’s attorney advised her not to surrender her phone voluntarily.
A warrant eventually resolved the issue.
The most important messages had been deleted.
Cloud backups did not care.
Recovered thread:
SERAPHINE: Friday review still on?
JULIAN: Sarah won’t approve Bright Harbor without incident history.
SERAPHINE: I have enough videos.
JULIAN: Videos look like a kid holding a baby.
SERAPHINE: Because that’s what he’s doing.
JULIAN: Then we need something concrete.
Two days later:
SERAPHINE: What if he leaves house with Ava?
JULIAN: Don’t put anything in writing you don’t want read later.
That sentence itself became revealing.
Another message:
SERAPHINE: Ten minutes max. Garden shaded. I’ll be right there.
No response.
Then:
SERAPHINE: If household “finds” them after he took her, assessment becomes obvious.
Julian:
I never told you to do that.
Seraphine:
You told me we need incident.
Julian:
Use your head.
Not clean conspiracy.
Julian had not explicitly ordered doghouse.
But he encouraged building evidence.
And knew Seraphine was considering staging something.
Did not stop her.
At 4:18 p.m. the day of incident:
SERAPHINE: Doing it now.**
At 4:19:
JULIAN: Sera don’t be stupid.**
At 4:37 Adrian entered gate.
Camera system restored automatically when the scheduled override expired.
Seraphine had intended eighteen minutes.
Exactly.
She believed shaded doghouse, dusk air, and short duration made it “safe.”
A pediatrician disagreed.
So did common sense.
She used a newborn as a prop.

And a six-year-old child as a defendant in a case she was manufacturing.
