Chapter 23 - Ava’s First Sleepover

Ava was seven when she wanted a backyard sleepover.

Not inside a doghouse.

A tent.

Milo immediately said:

“No.”

Ava frowned.

“Why?”

He could not explain at first.

A therapist helped family talk.

Ava eventually chose to sleep indoors.

Not because Milo ordered.

Because she cared.

A year later Milo suggested camping.

His idea.

They pitched tent on lawn.

Door unzipped.

Adrian slept nearby in second tent because he pretended this was for safety and not because mosquitoes terrified him.

At 2 a.m. Ava whispered:

“Milo?”

“What?”

“You awake?”

“Yes.”

“I’m scared.”

Milo said:

“Door open.”

Ava relaxed.

That phrase stayed with Adrian.

Door open.

No latch.
