Adrian was not.
His calendar remained full.

Flights.
He told himself children were safe now.
Then heard echo.
Safety was not same as presence.
He promoted COO to CEO and became executive chair.
Fewer flights.
No grand retirement.
No performative sacrifice.
He still worked.
But he stopped being unreachable.
Milo’s school knew how to contact him directly.
Ava’s daycare did too.
He attended individual education meetings.
He learned the names of Milo’s therapists instead of receiving summaries from spouse.
At one meeting Milo asked:
“You stay whole time?”
“Yes.”
“Promise?”
Adrian hesitated.
Then:
