Chapter 24 - Seraphine and Ava

When Ava was nine, supervised visits with Seraphine no longer required a professional in room, though boundaries remained.
Ava asked one day:
“Did you really lock me with Milo?”
Seraphine did not lie.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I wanted people to think Milo took you.”
“Why?”
“So adults would send him somewhere else.”
Ava stared.
“That’s horrible.”
“Yes.”
“Did you hate him?”
Seraphine cried.
“No.”
“That makes it worse.”
Seraphine nodded.
“You’re right.”
Ava left early.
Adrian expected her to say she never wanted to see Seraphine again.
Instead:
“I want a month.”
“Okay.”
“Maybe two.”
“Okay.”
“Don’t tell me what to do.”
“I won’t.”
She resumed visits later.
