Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Too Much
I followed Vanessa out of the restaurant.
Not because I trusted her.
Because I didn’t.
But because for the first time, she looked afraid of someone else.
And that meant there was a bigger threat.
She walked quickly toward her car.
“Vanessa!””
She stopped.
Slowly, she turned around.
“I can’t help you.””
“You already started.””
She looked exhausted.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at the street.
Cars passed between us.
People walked by, unaware that my entire life had changed.
“I was paid to get close to you.””
The words hurt.
Even though I expected them.
“How much?””
“Daniel.””
“How much?””
She looked away.
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
I felt sick.
“You sold my family for fifty thousand dollars?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Her voice cracked.
“I was supposed to marry you.””
I stared at her.
“You were supposed to marry me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To become Lily’s legal guardian.””
“And then?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“The money.””
She nodded.
“But I changed my mind.””
“When?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“When I realized Lily was just a little girl.””
I almost believed her.
Almost.
Then I remembered the room.
The torn dress.
The slap.
The command to call her Mom.
“You changed your mind after hurting her?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I panicked.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I was trying to prove I could control the situation.””
My anger returned.
“You don’t control children.””
“I know that now.””
“No. You know that because you got caught.””
She had no response.
A car horn sounded.
A black SUV stopped near the curb.
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“Go home.””
“Who is that?””
She stepped back.
“Go.””
The SUV door opened.
A man stepped out.
I recognized him.
The same man from the camera footage.
The one who met Vanessa in my kitchen.
He walked toward us calmly.
“Vanessa.””
She froze.
The man looked at me.
Then smiled.
“So this is Daniel.””
I felt my body tense.
“Who are you?””
He ignored me.
“You caused a lot of problems.””
Vanessa moved between us.
“Leave him alone.””
The man laughed.
“You suddenly care?””
“I said leave him alone.””
He looked amused.
“After everything you did?””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does he mean?””
The man smiled.
“She didn’t tell you everything.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Stop.””
The man stepped closer.
“Did she tell you she almost succeeded?””
My fists tightened.
“What does that mean?””
He looked directly at me.
“It means your wedding wasn’t supposed to be canceled.””
I stared at him.
“She was supposed to become your wife.””
“Yes.””
“She was supposed to gain access to Lily.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
The man smiled.
“Then you would have lost custody.””
My stomach turned.
“How?””
He reached into his coat and pulled out a folder.
“Because Vanessa had evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
The man opened the folder.
Inside was a stack of photographs.
He handed one to me.
I looked down.
And my heart stopped.
It was a picture of me.
At a bar.
Holding a drink.
A woman sitting beside me.
I knew that night.
It was years ago.
Before Vanessa.
Before Lily was even old enough to remember.
But the photo was edited.
Made to look worse.
The man smiled.
“Vanessa wasn’t only building a case to become Lily’s mother.””
He handed me another photo.
This one showed a document.
A fake report.
My name was on it.
The accusation was clear.
*Unfit father.*
I looked at him.
“You framed me.””
He smiled.
“No.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“She did.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The man stepped closer.
“You really thought you could walk away?””
Vanessa backed up.
“I’m done.””
The man’s smile disappeared.
“No, Vanessa.””
His voice became cold.
“You’re not.””
Then he looked at me.
“And now that Daniel knows the truth…”
He paused.
“There’s no reason to keep pretending.””
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
From Lily’s school.
I opened it.
May you like
My blood froze.
*Mr. Carter, please call us immediately. There is a woman here claiming to be Lily’s legal guardian.*
