Chapter 11: The Family Secret

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The school parking lot became completely silent.

My father stood in front of me.

A man I had trusted my entire life.

A man who taught me honesty mattered.

And now he was standing beside the same people connected to the nightmare destroying my family.

I stepped toward him.

“What did you know?””

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not defensiveness.

Pain.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I want the truth.””

Lily held onto my jacket.

My father looked at her.

Then looked away.

“I never wanted her involved.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

My aunt, Margaret, stepped forward.

“It was me.””

I froze.

“Claire’s mother?””

She nodded.

Tears ran down her face.

“I made the mistake.””

I felt numb.

“What mistake?””

She looked at Lily.

“Protecting her the wrong way.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting my daughter.””

My voice rose.

“But everyone hurt her.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

My father sighed.

“We need somewhere private.””

“No.””

People were watching.

Teachers.

Parents.

Strangers.

I didn’t care.

“I’m done with secrets.””

My father looked broken.

So he told me.

Right there.

“Claire found out Lily’s trust had been changed.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Someone attempted to transfer control of the money.””

“Who?””

Margaret looked down.

“Me.””

The answer stunned me.

“You?””

“I didn’t take anything.””

“Then why?””

She swallowed.

“Because someone threatened me.””

My anger slowed.

“Who?””

She looked at Adrian.

The man who had been silent.

“The same person who hired Vanessa.””

I turned.

“Who?””

Adrian finally spoke.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

I glared at him.

“I’m running out of patience.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

Then he said:

“The person behind all of this is someone who has been controlling your family for years.””

My father looked at him.

“Stop.””

Adrian smiled.

“You’re afraid, Robert?””

My father’s expression changed.

And that told me everything.

I stepped back.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You knew.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than any lie.

“You knew Vanessa was dangerous?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me marry her?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

My father’s voice cracked.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

I stared.

“You thought?””

He looked ashamed.

“I found out about Vanessa after you proposed.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I needed proof.””

I shook my head.

“No. You needed control.””

He looked down.

I knew I was right.

My father continued.

“Vanessa was being pressured by someone else.””

“Who?””

He looked at Adrian.

Adrian answered.

“Your older brother.””

The words didn’t make sense.

I stared.

“My brother is dead.””

Everyone went silent.

Then Margaret whispered:

“No.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“He isn’t.””

The air left my lungs.

“What are you saying?””

My father stepped forward.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“My brother died when he was nineteen.””

“That’s what you were told.””

I felt dizzy.

My entire life was cracking apart.

Adrian opened his folder.

Inside was a photograph.

An adult man.

Older.

Different.

But the eyes…

I knew those eyes.

The same eyes from childhood pictures.

The same eyes from my mother’s old albums.

My brother.

Alive.

Adrian placed the photo in my hand.

“He has been watching this family for years.””

I couldn’t speak.

“Why?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because he believes Claire took something that belonged to him.””

“What?””

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“Control.””

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke.

A voice I hadn’t heard in twenty years.

“Daniel.””

My blood froze.

The voice continued.

“I think it’s time we talk.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because I knew that voice.

My brother.

May you like

And then he said:

“You’re blaming the wrong people.””
