Chapter 7: The Lie Hidden in Claire’s File

I read Vanessa’s name again.

Then again.

But no matter how many times my eyes moved across the page, the words stayed the same.

*Witness: Vanessa Hale.*

The woman who claimed she barely knew anything about Claire.

The woman who told me she only wanted to “honor” Lily’s mother.

The woman who stood in my house and promised she would never replace Claire.

She had been there before I ever met her.

And she had lied about it.

Mark watched my face carefully.

“Daniel, say something.””

I pushed the file away.

“She knew Claire.””

“Yes.””

“She knew about Lily’s inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“She knew me.””

Mark nodded slowly.

“But we still need to understand how deep this goes.””

I stood up.

“No.””

Mark looked surprised.

“No?””

“I’ve spent years thinking I was unlucky.””

My voice cracked.

“I thought Claire’s death was just something horrible that happened. I thought meeting Vanessa was a second chance.””

I looked at the papers.

“But it wasn’t.””

The room went quiet.

“It was planned.””

Mark didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

The evidence was too strong.

I drove home with one thought repeating in my head.

*How much of my life was a lie?*

When I arrived, Lily was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.

She looked up immediately.

“Daddy!””

She ran toward me.

I forced a smile and picked her up.

But she noticed.

Children always notice.

“Are you sad?””

I held her tighter.

“A little.””

“Because of Vanessa?””

I froze.

“What makes you think that?””

She shrugged.

“She makes you sad.””

I sat down beside her.

“Lily…”

She looked at her drawing.

It was a picture of our family.

Me.

Her.

And a woman with brown hair standing far away.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

Then quietly said:

“That’s Vanessa.””

My chest tightened.

“Why is she standing over there?””

“Because I don’t know if she’s nice.””

I looked away.

I didn’t want Lily to see the anger in my eyes.

That night, I called Rachel.

She answered immediately.

“You found Claire’s letter.””

I stopped.

“How did you know?””

“Because Claire sent me a copy.””

I sat down.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa found out I had it.””

“What happened?””

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“She came to my apartment.””

I gripped the phone.

“When?””

“Four years ago.””

“What did she say?””

Rachel took a breath.

“She said Claire was gone, and I needed to stop digging.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She threatened you.””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She said accidents happen twice.””

I closed my eyes.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“She threatened your life?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

“I did.””

“And?””

“They didn’t have enough.””

I looked toward Lily’s room.

“Rachel, why come back now?””

“Because Vanessa made one mistake.””

“What?””

“She got impatient.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She waited years to get close to you. She built trust. She became someone you depended on.””

Rachel paused.

“Then she got greedy.””

I looked at the documents on my table.

“The wedding.””

“Yes.””

“She wanted legal access.””

“Yes.””

“And the inheritance.””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I opened it.

*I know you found Claire’s files. We need to talk before you destroy both our lives.*

I showed Rachel.

She went silent.

“She knows.””

“How?””

“Because she always knows more than she should.””

I stood up.

“I’m going to confront her.””

“No.””

“Rachel—”

“Daniel, don’t.””

“She needs to answer.””

“She won’t tell you the truth.””

“Then I’ll make her.””

Rachel’s voice became urgent.

“Daniel, listen to me. Vanessa isn’t dangerous because she lies.””

“Then why?””

“Because when she realizes she’s losing…”

A pause.

“She stops pretending to be kind.””

I looked at the message again.

Then I noticed something.

The message wasn’t just a warning.

There was a location attached.

A restaurant.

The same place Vanessa and I had our first date.

My stomach dropped.

“She wants me to meet her.””

Rachel whispered:

“Daniel, don’t go alone.””

But I was already grabbing my keys.

Because there was one question I needed answered.

May you like

Why did Vanessa know Claire’s name before I ever introduced them?

And I was about to ask the woman who had been lying to me from the beginning.
