Chapter 13: The Letter My Mother Hid
I stared at Michael’s message until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
Same words.
Same question.
*Ask your father why Claire was afraid of your mother.*
My entire life had become a collection of questions I never knew existed.
I looked at Lily sleeping on the couch beside me.
She trusted me completely.
And somehow, every adult around her had been carrying secrets.
I called my father.
He answered immediately.
“Daniel.””
“You have the letter.””
A long pause.
“Yes.””
“I want to see it.””
“Daniel, you need to understand—”
“No.””
My voice was firm.
“I don’t want another explanation. I don’t want another person telling me they were protecting me.””
Silence.
“I want the truth.””
Thirty minutes later, my father arrived.
He looked older than I had ever seen him.
Not physically.
Something else.
Like carrying secrets had finally become too heavy.
He handed me an envelope.
“I should have given this to you years ago.””
I looked at the handwriting.
My mother’s.
I opened it.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you. I hoped it never would.*
My hands trembled.
*Your brother Michael was not lost because of an accident. He left because someone convinced him he had been betrayed.*
I looked up.
My father stared at the floor.
I continued.
*The person who influenced him was someone inside our family. Someone who knew exactly how to manipulate his anger.*
My breathing slowed.
*I discovered too late that this person wanted control over everything your grandfather built. They wanted Michael angry. They wanted Daniel unaware.*
My eyes moved faster.
Then I saw the sentence that changed everything.
*That person was Claire’s father.*
I stopped.
“Claire’s father?””
My father nodded.
“Her father hated me.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed our family stole opportunities from his.””
I looked back at the letter.
*He convinced Michael that Claire was responsible for losing access to the family assets. He told him Daniel was the favorite. He told him Claire was protecting Lily’s inheritance because she wanted control.*
My stomach twisted.
Michael had been manipulated.
But that still didn’t explain Vanessa.
I kept reading.
*Years later, Claire discovered the truth. She found out someone was trying to use Lily’s trust. She was afraid because she knew the person behind it would not stop.*
The final paragraph was written differently.
Like my mother had rushed.
*Daniel, if Vanessa appears in your life, be careful. She is not the beginning of the problem. She is a symptom. Find the person she answers to.*
I lowered the letter.
“Everyone knew.””
My father looked at me.
“Not everyone.””
“You did.””
“Yes.””
“Claire knew.””
“Yes.””
“Mom knew.””
“Yes.””
I laughed quietly.
“Who didn’t know?””
My father looked at me.
“You.””
That hurt because it was true.
A knock came at the door.
I immediately stood.
My father looked worried.
“Who is it?””
I checked the camera.
My blood froze.
Michael stood outside.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakable.
I opened the door but didn’t step aside.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Michael smiled sadly.
“You look like Dad.””
I didn’t smile.
“You look dead.””
His expression changed.
Fair.
“I deserved that.””
“Why did you let me believe you were gone?””
“Because I thought disappearing was the only way to survive.””
“From who?””
He looked past me.
At my father.
“From him.””
My father stepped forward.
“Michael.””
“Don’t.””
My brother’s voice became cold.
“Don’t pretend you were protecting me.””
“I was trying to.””
“You chose him.””
He pointed at me.
“You always chose him.””
I shook my head.
“You’re wrong.””
Michael looked at me.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You weren’t replaced. You weren’t forgotten.””
His face cracked for a second.
A moment of pain.
Then it disappeared.
“I wanted to believe that.””
“Then why hurt my daughter?””
His eyes changed.
“What?””
“You were involved with Vanessa.””
His expression turned to confusion.
“No.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I never wanted Lily hurt.””
“Then explain.””
Michael looked at my father.
Then whispered:
“Because I was trying to stop the real person.””
I froze.
“What real person?””
Michael reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folder.
“The person who started everything.””
He handed it to me.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman.
A woman I recognized.
Not because I knew her.
Because I had seen her before.
In old family pictures.
My mother.
But beside her was someone else.
Someone who should not have been there.
Someone much younger.
Someone who had been manipulating everything from the shadows.
Michael looked at me.
“Daniel, Vanessa wasn’t working for me.””
May you like
My fingers tightened around the photo.
“She was working for our mother.””
