Chapter 5: The Hidden Camera
I didn’t sleep.
Not even for a minute.
Every sound in the house made me turn my head.
Every shadow made me wonder what else I had missed.
The next morning, I walked through every room.
The living room.
The kitchen.
The hallway.
My home suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Like someone had been watching us while I was too distracted to notice.
Lily found me standing near the bookshelf.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
She was holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Yeah, sweetheart?””
“Are we still a family?””
The question destroyed me.
I kneeled in front of her.
“We always will be.””
“But Vanessa said families need a mommy.””
I swallowed hard.
“Families need people who love and protect each other.””
She looked down.
“Did I do something wrong?””
“No.””
“Then why was she mad?””
I had no answer that wouldn’t hurt her.
So I hugged her.
“You did nothing wrong.””
My phone rang.
Mark.
I answered immediately.
“Tell me you found something.””
“I did.””
I stood up.
“What?””
“The guardianship document.””
“What about it?””
“It’s worse than we thought.””
I closed my eyes.
“How?””
“Your signature isn’t fake.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“Technically, you signed the page.””
“Then how is it fraud?””
“Because the page you signed wasn’t attached to the document you think you signed.””
I said nothing.
Mark continued.
“She swapped pages.””
The anger that filled me was almost impossible to control.
“She planned this.””
“Yes.””
“Can we prove it?””
“We need evidence.””
I looked around my house.
Evidence.
The word echoed in my mind.
Then I remembered Rachel’s words.
Someone living under my roof.
I checked my security system.
Nothing.
I checked the cameras outside.
Nothing unusual.
Then I noticed something.
A small blinking light near the hallway bookshelf.
I walked closer.
My blood turned cold.
A tiny camera.
Hidden behind a decorative picture frame.
I pulled it out.
My hands shook.
Someone had placed it there recently.
I called Mark.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“A hidden camera.””
There was a pause.
“Daniel, don’t touch anything else.””
“Too late.””
“Where was it?””
“In my hallway.””
Mark became quiet.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
“If someone planted that camera, they weren’t just watching you.””
I looked toward Lily’s room.
“They were watching her.””
I immediately checked the recording device.
There were files.
Hundreds of them.
Dates.
Times.
Weeks of footage.
My stomach twisted.
I opened the oldest video.
The screen showed my house.
Vanessa walking through the hallway.
She wasn’t alone.
A man followed behind her.
I leaned closer.
I didn’t recognize him.
Vanessa handed him a folder.
He opened it.
Then he smiled.
The audio was unclear.
I increased the volume.
Static.
Then a few words came through.
“...once the wedding happens…”
Another voice.
“...the father will cooperate.””
My hands shook.
I skipped forward.
More footage.
Vanessa talking on the phone.
Vanessa looking through my desk.
Vanessa entering Lily’s room while she slept.
I covered my mouth.
Then I saw the final video.
Recorded two nights before the wedding.
Vanessa was sitting at my kitchen table.
Across from her was the same man.
This time, the audio was clear.
The man looked at Vanessa.
“Are you sure Daniel won’t suspect anything?””
Vanessa smiled.
“He trusts me completely.””
“And the girl?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“Once I’m legally responsible for Lily, Daniel won’t have a choice.””
The man nodded.
“And the money?””
Vanessa smiled.
“That’s the easy part.””
I stopped the video.
My entire body felt numb.
This wasn’t about a wedding.
This wasn’t about becoming a family.
This was a plan.
A plan that had been running long before I ever proposed.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel, you found the camera.””
I froze.
“Who are you?””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“The person Vanessa hired to make sure you never found out the truth.””
I gripped the phone.
“What do you want?””
The man paused.
May you like
Then said:
“I want you to know Vanessa wasn’t the one who started this plan.””
