Chapter 6: The Name in the File
The voice on the phone disappeared before I could ask another question.
I called back.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
I stared at the screen.
Who was this man?
And what did he mean?
Vanessa wasn’t the one who started the plan.
I replayed the sentence over and over.
Because that meant there was someone above her.
Someone who had been pulling strings.
Someone who knew exactly how to get close to me.
I went back to the hidden camera footage.
I watched every clip.
Every conversation.
Every movement.
I was looking for something I missed.
A name.
A location.
Anything.
Then I saw it.
A folder on the kitchen table.
The man had opened it for only a few seconds.
But in the corner of the page was a logo.
A law firm.
I recognized it.
It was the same firm that handled Claire’s estate.
I immediately called them.
A receptionist answered.
“Whitmore and Hayes, how may I help you?””
“This is Daniel Carter. I need information about a previous estate case.””
“One moment.””
I waited.
The hold music felt endless.
Finally, a man answered.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“I’m reviewing the file.””
My heart beat faster.
“What file?””
“Claire Carter’s estate.””
The way he said her name made me nervous.
“Why do you sound surprised?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because someone accessed that file last month.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
“I can’t disclose that without authorization.””
“Someone tried to take legal control of my daughter.””
Silence.
Then the lawyer lowered his voice.
“Mr. Carter, you should come into the office.””
“Why?””
“Because there are documents in Claire’s file that you have never seen.””
I felt a chill.
“What documents?””
“I can’t discuss them over the phone.””
I looked at Lily playing quietly on the floor.
“Can you tell me one thing?””
“Yes?””
“Is my daughter in danger?””
The lawyer didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
I ended the call.
That afternoon, I met Mark at the law office.
He placed a folder on the table.
“This is everything.””
I opened it.
The first page was Claire’s original estate plan.
The second page was a letter.
My wife’s handwriting.
I recognized it instantly.
My hands started shaking.
*Daniel, if you’re reading this, something has happened that made you open this file. I need you to trust your instincts.*
I swallowed.
Mark watched me quietly.
I continued reading.
*There is someone who may try to get close to you because of Lily’s inheritance. I hope I’m wrong.*
My eyes burned.
Claire knew.
She knew someone might come.
The next line made my heart stop.
*If a woman named Vanessa enters your life, do not let her near Lily without knowing the truth.*
I looked up.
“What?””
Mark looked confused.
“What?””
I pushed the letter toward him.
“Read that.””
He did.
His expression changed.
“Daniel…”
Claire had written Vanessa’s name.
Four years before I met her.
I kept reading.
*I met her once. She asked questions about Lily. Too many questions. I didn’t trust her.*
My breathing became uneven.
How?
How could Claire know?
The room felt like it was spinning.
Mark flipped through the pages.
“There’s more.””
At the bottom of the file was another document.
A police report.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
The date.
The date was the week before Claire died.
“What is this?””
Mark looked at the report.
“It says Claire reported someone following her.””
I couldn’t speak.
Claire had been afraid.
And I never knew.
I always thought her death was an accident.
I thought I lost her because of something random.
But now…
I wasn’t sure anymore.
Mark pointed at the report.
“Daniel, look at the witness name.””
I looked.
My blood went cold.
Because the person who reported seeing the suspicious vehicle near Claire’s car was someone I knew.
Someone who had been at my wedding.
Someone who had hugged me and told me everything would be okay.
The witness name was:
*Vanessa Hale.*
May you like
And beneath it was a handwritten note from the investigator:
*Witness changed statement three days later. Possible intimidation.*
