Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Message

I stared at the name on my phone until the letters blurred.

*Rachel Whitmore.*

Claire’s younger sister.

The woman who disappeared from our lives after Claire’s funeral.

The woman who blamed me for everything.

My thumb hovered over the call button.

For four years, I had heard nothing from her.

Not a birthday message for Lily.

Not a Christmas card.

Not even a single question about how her niece was doing.

Then, minutes after I discovered my fiancée had been hiding secrets, Rachel appeared with evidence.

I called.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Then a quiet voice answered.

“Daniel.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Rachel.””

There was a long silence.

“You finally know.””

My jaw tightened.

“Know what?””

“That Vanessa was never trying to become Lily’s mother.””

I looked toward my daughter’s bedroom door.

“She tried to take my daughter from me.””

Rachel exhaled.

“I know.””

“How?””

Another silence.

Then she said:

“Because I watched it happen.””

My heart sank.

“What are you talking about?””

“I was there, Daniel.””

I stood up from the couch.

“Where?””

“The day Vanessa met Lily.””

The room felt suddenly colder.

I remembered that day.

A coffee shop.

A nervous woman with a warm smile.

Vanessa had told me she loved children. She had told me she admired how dedicated I was as a father.

I thought I had found someone who understood me.

Rachel’s voice interrupted my thoughts.

“Daniel, Vanessa didn’t meet you by accident.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she knew about Claire.””

I stopped moving.

“Everyone knew Claire died.””

“No.”” Rachel’s voice became sharper.

“She knew more than that.””

I walked to the window.

Rain tapped against the glass.

“What are you saying?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Vanessa knew about the life insurance.””

I froze.

“What life insurance?””

The silence that followed was worse than any answer.

“Daniel…”

“Rachel. What life insurance?””

“She never told you?””

I felt anger rising.

“Told me what?””

“When Claire died, there was a policy.””

My fingers went numb.

“I know Claire had insurance. It paid medical bills and helped with the house.””

“There was another policy.””

My breathing slowed.

“What?””

“A separate policy Claire created for Lily.””

I stared at the floor.

“No.””

“She wanted Lily protected.””

“How much?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Enough that someone greedy would notice.””

The pieces started falling into place.

Vanessa’s sudden interest in my life.

Her obsession with becoming part of our family.

The paperwork.

The guardianship.

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rachel’s voice cracked.

“Because I tried.””

“What?””

“I tried to warn you.””

I remembered.

Four years ago.

After Claire’s funeral.

Rachel had called me several times.

I ignored her.

I was grieving.

Angry.

Lost.

I thought she blamed me.

“I thought you hated me,” I whispered.

“I did.””

The honesty surprised me.

Rachel continued.

“But hating you didn’t mean I wanted Lily hurt.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why disappear?””

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

My eyes opened.

“She what?””

“She knew I was investigating her.””

“Investigating?””

“I saw her talking to someone about Lily’s trust fund.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

“I don’t know his full name.””

“Rachel.””

“I only heard Vanessa say one thing.””

“What?””

“She said, ‘Once Daniel signs over guardianship, everything becomes easier.’”

I looked toward Lily’s room.

My daughter.

My entire world.

“Why now?”” I asked.

“Because she failed.””

“What do you mean?””

“She thought the wedding would happen. She thought after today, she would have control.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

From Vanessa.

I opened it.

*You need to bring Lily back. We need to discuss this like adults.*

Rachel heard my silence.

“What happened?””

“Vanessa texted me.””

“Don’t respond.””

“Why?””

“Because she’s scared.””

I looked at the message.

“What makes you think that?””

“Because she only acts calm when she thinks she’s winning.””

I wanted answers.

I wanted to know every secret Vanessa had buried.

But before I could speak, Rachel said something that made my blood freeze.

“Daniel, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“I wasn’t the person who sent you those videos.””

My eyes moved back to my phone.

“What?””

“I don’t have access to your house.””

“Then who sent them?””

Rachel went quiet.

Then she whispered:

“The person who recorded Vanessa was someone living under your roof.””
