Chapter 10: The Guardian Who Never Was
I called Lily’s school before I even realized I was moving.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Then the receptionist answered.
“Carter Elementary, how can I help you?””
“This is Daniel Carter. I received a message about my daughter.””
There was a pause.
“Yes, Mr. Carter. We have a situation.””
My heart tightened.
“What situation?””
“A woman arrived thirty minutes ago claiming she has temporary guardianship of Lily.””
My grip on the phone tightened.
“Who?””
The receptionist lowered her voice.
“She identified herself as Vanessa Hale.””
I looked across the parking lot.
Vanessa was still standing there.
The man beside her watched me carefully.
“No.””
“Mr. Carter?””
“She has no right to take my daughter.””
The receptionist hesitated.
“Sir, we haven’t released Lily. We asked her to wait while we verified the documents.””
I closed my eyes.
“Thank you. Please keep Lily inside.””
“We will.””
I ended the call.
The man smiled.
“You’re too late.””
I turned toward him.
“What did you do?””
“Nothing.””
His calmness made me angrier.
“Who are you?””
He looked amused.
“You still don’t know?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“Don’t.””
Her face fell.
“I can explain.””
“You went to my daughter’s school.””
“I had to.””
“You had to?””
She looked desperate.
“If I didn’t, they would know everything.””
“What everything?””
The man answered for her.
“That she was never really your fiancée.””
I stared at him.
Vanessa looked away.
The words hurt because they were true.
The man extended his hand.
“Adrian Cole.””
I didn’t take it.
“I don’t care.””
“You will.””
He opened the folder again.
“You think Vanessa was the mastermind because she was the closest person to you.””
He stepped closer.
“But she was only a tool.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn’t deny it.
“Who hired you?””
Adrian smiled.
“Someone who wanted Claire Carter’s money protected.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
He pulled out another document.
“This is the original trust agreement.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Why show me?””
“Because Claire made a mistake.””
My stomach tightened.
“Don’t talk about her.””
“She trusted the wrong person.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Adrian, stop.””
He ignored her.
“Claire discovered someone was trying to access Lily’s inheritance before Lily turned eighteen.””
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“Your own family.””
The words hit like a punch.
“What?””
He smiled slightly.
“You never wondered why Claire was so careful?””
I thought of her.
The locked drawers.
The passwords.
The late-night phone calls.
I thought she was just being cautious.
“She knew someone close to her was involved.””
“Who?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Instead, he handed me the document.
“This explains everything.””
I took it.
The page contained Claire’s notes.
My eyes scanned the handwriting.
Then stopped.
*If anything happens to me, Daniel must not trust anyone who suddenly appears claiming to protect Lily.*
My breath caught.
Suddenly Vanessa’s arrival after Claire’s death didn’t feel like a coincidence.
But then I saw another line.
*The person helping me investigate knows the truth.*
Below it was a name.
I stared.
No.
It couldn’t be.
My phone rang.
Mark.
I answered.
“Daniel.””
His voice sounded urgent.
“Where are you?””
“At the school.””
“Get there immediately.””
“I’m already—”
“No, Daniel. Listen.””
Something in his voice made me stop.
“What happened?””
“I checked Vanessa’s guardianship filing.””
“And?””
“It wasn’t filed by Vanessa.””
I looked at Adrian.
“What?””
Mark lowered his voice.
“Someone else submitted it.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“The filing attorney is your father’s lawyer.””
My blood went cold.
“My father’s lawyer?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Adrian.
He watched my reaction.
Like he already knew.
“Daniel,” Mark said, “there’s something you need to understand.””
“What?””
“Your father knew about this paperwork.””
The world seemed to tilt.
“My father?””
Before Mark could answer, I heard Lily’s voice.
“Daddy!””
I turned.
She was standing inside the school entrance.
A teacher beside her.
But behind them…
My father was walking toward us.
And he wasn’t alone.
Beside him was a woman holding a folder.
A woman I had not seen in years.
My aunt.
Claire’s mother.
And she was crying.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at everyone.

Then my father said the words that shattered everything.
“You need to hear the truth about Claire’s death.””
