Chapter 12: The Brother Who Came Back

I stood frozen with the phone against my ear.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone could see it on my face.

I knew who it was.

The person I had buried in my memories.

The person I had mourned since I was a teenager.

My brother.

Michael.

Alive.

“Michael?””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“I wondered if you’d recognize me.””

My throat tightened.

“How?””

“That’s your first question?””

I looked at my father.

Then Margaret.

Then Adrian.

Everyone looked away.

“How are you alive?””

“Because everyone needed me to be dead.””

The words made my stomach turn.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Think about it, Daniel. Who benefited from my disappearance?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

“You were always the good son.””

I closed my eyes.

“Michael…”

“You got the house. The company. Dad’s approval.””

My father looked down.

“That’s not why—”

Michael interrupted.

“Don’t pretend you remember me, Dad.””

The phone went quiet.

I looked at my father.

He was crying.

“Where are you?””

Michael laughed softly.

“Still trying to save everyone.””

“Where are you?””

“I’m close.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Then immediately called back.

No answer.

Adrian watched me.

“You understand now.””

I turned.

“Understand what?””

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to destroy you.””

I laughed.

“She attacked my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“She lied.””

“Yes.””

“She almost took Lily.””

“Yes.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Adrian looked serious.

“She was trying to survive.””

I shook my head.

“She chose money.””

“No.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She chose fear.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know what he would do.””

I looked at her.

“You knew Michael?””

She nodded.

“When?””

“Before I met you.””

The anger returned.

“Of course.””

“Daniel, listen.””

“No.””

I stepped away.

“Everyone knew things except me.””

I looked at my father.

“You.””

I looked at Margaret.

“You.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You.””

My voice broke.

“I was the only person who didn’t know my own life.””

Nobody answered.

That night, I brought Lily home.

I locked every door.

I checked every window.

For the first time in years, I didn’t feel like my house was safe.

I felt like it was a place where secrets waited.

Lily sat beside me.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you going to leave me?””

The question destroyed me.

I turned toward her.

“Never.””

“Promise?””

I held her hand.

“Forever.””

She leaned against me.

Then she whispered:

“I remember Uncle Michael.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked confused.

“Uncle Michael?””

“Yes.””

“Sweetheart, you were two years old when he disappeared.””

She frowned.

“He used to bring me books.””

My heart started racing.

“What books?””

“The ones about princesses.””

I couldn’t move.

Because Lily remembered someone she shouldn’t.

I called my father.

He answered immediately.

“Daniel.””

“Did Michael ever meet Lily?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“After Claire died.””

I stood up.

“What?””

“He came back once.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he wasn’t the same.””

I looked at Lily.

“What happened?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“He blamed Claire.””

“For what?””

“He believed Claire took money from him.””

I clenched my fist.

“She didn’t.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because someone convinced him.””

“Who?””

My father hesitated.

Then said:

“The person who has been controlling him.””

I looked toward the window.

“Who?””

My father whispered:

“Your mother.””

I stopped breathing.

“My mother died ten years ago.””

“I know.””

“Dad…”

“I know.””

The silence was unbearable.

Then my father said:

“Daniel, there is something you need to see.””

“What?””

“A letter your mother left.””

My heart pounded.

“Why now?””

“Because Michael is coming back.””

A pause.

“And when he does, he won’t come alone.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Michael.

One sentence.

*Ask your father why Claire was afraid of your mother.*
