Chapter 8: The Confession at the Restaurant

The restaurant looked exactly the same.

Same lights.

Same corner table.

Same flowers near the window.

Four years ago, Vanessa sat across from me here and told me she believed people were brought into our lives for a reason.

I thought she meant love.

Now I wondered if she meant opportunity.

She was already waiting.

When I walked in, she looked up.

For a second, she looked relieved.

Then she saw my expression.

The relief disappeared.

“You know.””

I sat down.

“You tell me.””

Vanessa looked around.

“Not here.””

“You chose this place.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

My voice was colder than I expected.

“You wanted to talk. So talk.””

She looked tired.

Not guilty.

Tired.

That bothered me.

Because guilt would have meant she understood what she did.

“You found Claire’s file.””

I stared at her.

“You knew her.””

Vanessa looked away.

A few seconds passed.

Then she said:

“Yes.””

The answer hit harder than I expected.

“How?””

“I met her.””

“When?””

“Before you.””

My hands curled under the table.

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because of Lily.””

The anger came instantly.

“You approached my daughter before you approached me?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at the window.

“Claire contacted me.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“Claire hated you?””

“She didn’t hate me.””

“She wrote that she didn’t trust you.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You read everything.””

“Yes.””

“Then you know she was paranoid.””

I stood slightly.

“Don’t.””

She looked up.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t talk about my wife like she was crazy.””

The table went silent.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Claire was scared.””

“Yes.””

“Because she knew.””

“Knew what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

Not an act.

Real fear.

“She knew someone was after Lily.””

I froze.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“The truth?””

I placed the printed documents on the table.

“My daughter’s guardianship?””

Her face changed.

“The camera?””

Her lips parted.

“Claire’s file?””

Silence.

“You lied about everything.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes don’t require hidden cameras.””

She looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She didn’t answer.

“Of what, Vanessa?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at her.

“You were never in love with me.””

Her silence was the answer.

Then she said something unexpected.

“I did love you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“I did.””

“You loved what I had.””

Her expression hardened.

“You think I’m a monster.””

“I think you hurt my daughter.””

That changed her.

Her face became colder.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

I leaned forward.

“Then tell me.””

She looked around.

Then whispered:

“Your wife’s death wasn’t random.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Claire found out something.””

“What?””

“She found out who was really interested in Lily’s money.””

“Who?””

Vanessa’s hands trembled.

Before she could answer, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And her face turned pale.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, she picked up.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke on the other end.

I couldn’t hear everything.

But I heard Vanessa say:

“I told you I couldn’t do this anymore.””

My eyes narrowed.

She was talking to someone else.

Someone controlling her.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel knows.””

A pause.

Then her expression changed.

Fear.

Pure fear.

She ended the call.

“Who was that?””

She stood up.

“I have to go.””

I grabbed her arm.

“No.””

She looked at me.

And what she said next made me let go.

“Daniel, if you want to protect Lily…”

Her voice shook.

“You need to find the person who hired me.””

I froze.

“Who hired you?””

Vanessa looked toward the door.

May you like

Then whispered:

“The person who killed Claire.””
