Chapter 14: The Truth That Destroyed Us All

I read the name written on the back of the photograph.

*Evelyn Carter.*

My mother.

Dead for ten years.

The woman who baked my birthday cakes.

The woman who held me when I was sick.

The woman who taught me to forgive.

My hands shook.

“This isn’t possible.””

Michael sat down.

“I know.””

My father looked devastated.

“I never wanted you to find out.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The anger came back.

“You knew Mom was involved?””

“Not everything.””

“How much?””

My father looked away.

“Enough.””

I couldn’t believe it.

The people who raised me.

The people I trusted most.

They had all been hiding pieces of my life.

Michael opened the folder.

“Mom was afraid of losing control.””

“Control over what?””

“The family assets.””

I frowned.

“But why Lily?””

“Because Claire protected Lily’s inheritance.””

Michael pointed at the documents.

“Your mother believed if she controlled Lily, she controlled the future.””

I felt sick.

“My mother tried to take money from a child?””

Michael nodded.

“And when Claire found out…”

He stopped.

I didn’t need him to finish.

“What happened to Claire?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was the answer.

I stood up.

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re telling me my mother was connected to Claire’s death?””

Michael looked down.

“I don’t know if she caused it.””

“But?””

“But I know she knew something.””

I walked away.

My memories were fighting reality.

My mother singing in the kitchen.

My mother holding Lily as a baby.

My mother telling me family was everything.

How could that person be connected to this?

My phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

*I know who you’re with.*

My stomach tightened.

Another message.

*He’s lying to you.*

I looked at Michael.

“How does she know?””

Michael’s face changed.

“Because she’s scared.””

A third message appeared.

*Meet me alone. I can prove it.*

I showed Michael.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“What?””

“She wants you away from us.””

“Maybe she really has proof.””

Michael looked at me.

“She has spent years manipulating you.””

“And you haven’t?””

The words came out before I could stop them.

His face changed.

Because I hurt him.

But he nodded.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I made mistakes.””

He looked at Lily’s room.

“But I never wanted her to suffer.””

My father spoke quietly.

“Daniel, there is one more thing.””

I turned.

“What?””

He held out another envelope.

“This was found after your mother died.””

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten confession.

Not from my mother.

From Vanessa.

My heart stopped.

I read.

*I was supposed to follow Evelyn’s instructions.*

The room became silent.

*I was supposed to marry Daniel, gain access to Lily’s trust, and make it appear Daniel was unstable.*

My hands shook.

*But I made a mistake. I started caring about him.*

I looked at Michael.

He said nothing.

I continued.

*When Daniel found out about the guardianship, everything collapsed. Evelyn told me to continue. She said if I failed, she would destroy me.*

The final line made me freeze.

*She told me she had already destroyed Claire once.*

I dropped the paper.

No one spoke.

The truth was finally there.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Michael.

Everyone connected.

But one question remained.

If my mother was behind this…

Why was Vanessa still alive?

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“What?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel, I need you to listen.””

“You have five seconds.””

“She knows you found out.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Evelyn’s old partner.””

I frowned.

“My mother is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then who?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The man who helped her.””

I looked at Michael.

“What man?””

Vanessa breathed heavily.

“The man who has been controlling everything since the beginning.””

The lights in my house suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

Then came a sound.

The front door unlocking.

Slowly.

Michael stood.

“Someone’s here.””

I heard footsteps.

A familiar voice called from the darkness.

“Daniel.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It was the man from the camera.

The man who had been one step ahead of us.

Adrian.

But he wasn’t alone.

Another voice spoke behind him.

A voice I recognized from childhood.

My uncle.

May you like

And he said:

“Your mother never finished what she started.””
