Chapter 9

The basement of the mountain lodge was a stark contrast to the opulence above. Built directly into the frozen Colorado bedrock, it was meant for cold storage and emergency supplies. There were no windows, no carpets, and no heat. The temperature hovered barely above freezing, the stone walls radiating a bitter, bone-deep chill.
Mark and Claudia huddled together in the center of the concrete floor, stripped down to their silk undergarments. The luxurious cashmere and tailored trousers were gone, replaced by humiliating exposure to the biting cold. Mark’s face was a swollen, bloody mess where Richard had struck him, and Claudia’s teeth chattered so violently it sounded like castanets.
The heavy steel door at the top of the concrete stairs clanked open. Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed down the stairwell.
Richard descended, still wearing his immaculate three-piece suit, a lit cigar clamped between his teeth. The glowing cherry of the tobacco provided the only warmth in the room, and he possessed no intention of sharing it. Sal and two massive bodyguards followed, standing silently at the base of the stairs.
"Dad... please..." Mark begged, wrapping his arms around himself. His breath plumed in the freezing air. "I'm freezing. We're freezing."
"Noah was freezing," Richard stated simply, pulling a wooden chair from a corner and sitting down. He took a slow drag from his cigar, blowing a thick cloud of smoke into the frigid air. "He was freezing, starving, and beaten under my own roof. Under my name."
"It was her!" Mark cried out, pointing a trembling finger at his wife. "Claudia hated his mother! She hated that he was a reminder of my affair! She told the staff to cut his rations, to lock him in the lower quarters. I just... I just let it happen to keep the peace!"
Claudia turned on him like a feral cat, her lips blue from the cold. "You spineless worm! You hated him just as much! You didn't want him around your fancy friends! You told the nanny to hit him when he cried!"
Richard listened to them tear each other apart, his expression an unreadable mask of absolute disgust. He had built an empire of blood and shadow, but there were rules. There was honor. Family was sacred. To see his own son act with such cowardly malice turned his stomach.
"Silence," Richard commanded softly.
They both snapped their mouths shut, shivering uncontrollably.
"You blame each other, yet you are both complicit," Richard said, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "You thought because I was old, because I let you run the northern operations, that you were kings in your own castle. You forgot who owns the ground you walk on."
"We're sorry," Claudia sobbed, wrapping her arms around her bare shoulders. "We'll send him away to a boarding school. You'll never have to see him again."
Richard’s eyes flared with a sudden, terrifying intensity. He stood up, kicking the heavy wooden chair away. It shattered against the concrete wall.
"You will never touch him again," Richard roared, the sheer volume of his voice shaking the dust from the ceiling. "He is my grandson. He is a Bellacorte. And from this day forward, he is my sole heir."

Mark stared at his father in absolute horror. "Heir? Dad, he’s a bastard! He’s three years old! You can't strip me of my inheritance!"
"I just did," Richard whispered, stepping into the freezing shadows. "You wanted to teach the boy a lesson about his place in this family. Now, I am going to teach you yours."
