Chapter 53 - The Father Who Chose PowerJulian Vance sat upright in his hospital bed, one arm restrained and two federal officers stationed outside the door.

His shoulder had been repaired surgically. The arrogant confidence that once dominated New York's criminal elite had faded, but his eyes remained dangerously alert.

When Claire entered, he smiled.

"My daughter."

"Don't call me that."

Julian laughed softly.

"Still angry? After everything I've given you?"

Claire placed a photograph on the bedside table.

It showed Evelyn standing between her two children beside the white fountain.

Julian's smile vanished.

"Where did you get that?"

"From the house you tried to erase."

His gaze darkened.

Claire took a seat.

"I know Elias was six when he disappeared. I know Mother tried to stop you."

Julian looked away.

"And I know Sabine controlled the operation."

He said nothing.

Claire leaned forward.

"Did you order Mother's death?"

Julian slowly turned toward her.

"Your mother was brilliant. She understood money better than almost anyone I've ever met."

"That's not what I asked."

"She could have ruled beside me."

"Did you kill her?"

He exhaled.

"Evelyn wanted to take both of you away. She believed she could expose the Council and somehow survive."

Claire's hands tightened.

"So you stopped her."

"I gave Sabine authority to contain the situation."

"Contain?"

"Those were the words on the order."

Claire stared at him.

"And what happened after you signed it?"

Julian looked toward the window.

"Your mother died."

The room seemed to lose all sound.

Claire remembered Evelyn's voice from the recovered recording.

They belong to themselves.

She swallowed.

"Did you know what Sabine intended?"

Julian did not answer.

His silence was more revealing than any confession.

Claire stood.

"You knew."

"Claire, everything I did was to protect the family."

"No. Everything you did was to protect your power."

Julian's expression hardened.

"Power is the only thing that keeps people safe."

Claire shook her head.

"Then why was your family never safe from you?"

For a moment, Julian looked genuinely wounded.

Then his face twisted.

"You think Elias is better than me? That boy has spent twenty-four years learning to command men who would kill for him."

"Then I'll give him the chance you never gave either of us."

"To do what?"

"Choose."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"You think love will make him harmless?"

Claire moved toward the door.

"No. I think truth will make him free."

Before leaving, she turned once more.

"Mother tried to save us from you. And she was right."

Outside the room, Reyes was waiting.

Claire handed her a written account of Julian's statements.

"Get the original authorization he signed," Claire said. "Whatever happened to Mother, Sabine wasn't acting alone."

Reyes nodded.

"We're already pursuing the Council's archived orders."

Claire looked back through the glass.

Julian sat alone beneath the harsh hospital lights.

For the first time, the man who had tried to own an empire possessed almost nothing.

Not his companies.

May you like

Not his freedom.

And not his children.
