Chapter 58 - The Cost of MercyFourteen months later, the final phase of the criminal proceedings brought Claire back to a federal courtroom.

Julian Vance had been convicted on multiple charges connected to the Council's conspiracy, including offenses arising from Evelyn Shaw's death.

Sabine Keller faced her own convictions for financial crimes and her role in the coercion and abduction scheme.

Both received lengthy prison sentences.

Their attorneys announced appeals, but the legal system had finally stripped away the protection that decades of money and influence had given them.

Claire watched without satisfaction.

She had once imagined revenge would feel like victory.

Instead, it felt like the end of a long illness.

Relief.

Exhaustion.

And grief for everything that could never be returned.

Outside the courtroom, Elias approached her.

"Do you regret anything?"

Claire considered the question.

"I regret that Mother wasn't here to see us together."

Elias took her hand.

"Maybe she knew we would find our way."

Claire smiled sadly.

"I hope so."

Their peace lasted only a moment.

Dominic's sentencing hearing was scheduled that afternoon.

He had admitted his role in the criminal organization, disclosed financial records, and cooperated with investigators.

His testimony had helped dismantle several remaining operations.

But he had also committed serious crimes.

Claire refused to pretend otherwise.

Inside the courtroom, Dominic stood before the judge.

His black suits and expensive watches were gone.

He wore a simple dark jacket, his hair shorter than she remembered.

When asked whether he wished to speak, Dominic looked toward Claire.

"For most of my life, I believed protecting someone meant deciding what was best for them."

He paused.

"I used fear to keep enemies away. I used secrecy to keep people close. And I convinced myself that loving someone excused the lies I told."

Claire lowered her eyes.

Dominic continued.

"It doesn't."

His voice remained steady.

"I hurt people. I participated in things I knew were wrong. I can't change those choices."

He looked at the judge.

"I accept responsibility."

The court imposed a sentence of two years' imprisonment under the terms of his plea, taking account of the specific offenses, his cooperation, and the applicable sentencing considerations.

Dominic also agreed to financial forfeiture and restitution obligations.

When the hearing ended, Claire approached him in the secured corridor.

He looked surprised.

"You came."

"Of course."

"I didn't think you'd want to see me."

Claire studied his face.

For the first time, Dominic was not presenting himself as a powerful man.

He was simply someone willing to face what he had done.

"I don't know what happens to us," she said.

He nodded.

"I understand."

"I still love you."

His eyes filled with tears.

"But love isn't enough without trust."

"I know."

Claire reached into her handbag.

She withdrew the diamond ring from the cathedral.

Dominic stared at it.

"I kept it," she said. "Not because I'm waiting for you to make another promise."

She closed her fingers around it.

"Because one day, if we choose each other again, I want that choice to be real."

Dominic swallowed.

"I'll spend the rest of my life becoming someone who deserves that choice."

Claire shook her head gently.

"Become that man for yourself first."

A guard approached.

Dominic had to leave.

He looked at her one final time.

"I love you, Claire."

She smiled through her tears.

"Then live honestly, Dominic."

May you like

And she watched him walk away.

This time, she was not losing herself when she let him go.
