Chapter 44 - The Letter in the Grandfather ClockClaire returned to Arthur Thorne's abandoned mansion under federal supervision.

The house that had once glittered with wealth now felt like a museum of cruelty.

White sheets covered the furniture. Asset-seizure notices hung beside empty frames where expensive paintings had been removed.

In Arthur's study, the grandfather clock stood exactly where Claire remembered it.

Eleanor had already given her the obsidian drive hidden inside.

But Agent Reyes had found a second compartment.

Behind the clock's wooden base lay a narrow envelope.

It was addressed in familiar handwriting.

For Claire and Elias, when you are old enough to understand.

Claire sat on the dusty carpet and opened it.

Inside was a photograph of her mother holding two laughing children beside a fountain.

The girl wore a pale blue dress.

The boy held a small wooden horse.

For the first time, Claire saw proof that her childhood had once contained happiness.

Beneath the photograph lay a letter.

Evelyn had written it shortly before her death.

She explained that the Sovereign Council had been created to protect enormous financial holdings, but men like Julian had transformed it into an instrument of coercion.

She had discovered that the Council was using legitimate businesses to conceal the movement of stolen wealth.

When she refused to surrender the financial records, Julian threatened their children.

Evelyn had tried to escape with both twins.

She failed.

On the night Elias disappeared, she hid Claire with someone she believed would protect her.

Arthur Thorne.

Her greatest mistake.

The final paragraph was written in unsteady handwriting.

If either of you grows up believing I chose the other, please understand this: I fought for both of you until they took away my chance to fight. Neither of you was abandoned. Neither of you was less loved.

Claire pressed the letter against her chest.

Twenty-four years.

That was how long Elias had believed he was unwanted.

And how long Claire had believed she had never been loved enough to keep.

Reyes crouched beside her.

"There's something else."

She pointed to the back of the photograph.

Two small symbols had been drawn beneath the children's names.

A crescent beneath Claire.

A star beneath Elias.

Below them, Evelyn had written:

The truth belongs to both.

Reyes studied the markings.

"Those symbols appear in the vault's secondary authorization records."

Claire looked up.

"The second key."

"Possibly. But we need to verify what they authorize."

Claire gently folded the letter.

At that moment, her phone rang.

An unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke quietly.

"Did you find Mother's letter?"

Claire couldn't breathe.

"Elias?"

There was a long silence.

Then her brother said something that shattered her heart.

"Before you tell me she loved us both, Claire... explain why I spent twenty-four years being told you watched them take me."
