Chapter 33 - The face in the frame

Richard stood motionless in the center of the grand foyer, the heavy steel of his pistol hanging at his side. He didn't blink. He didn't shout. Decades of ruling the underworld had taught him that the loudest man in the room was always the weakest, and right now, every muscle in his body was coiled like an iron spring.
"Julian," Richard said, his voice flat and echoing into the acoustic pickups embedded in the ceiling. "You always were an arrogant coward. Hiding behind screens and using babies as shields."
On the massive digital display, Julian let out a low, amused chuckle. He picked up an ornate porcelain cup, took a measured sip, and set it down without a sound. "A coward, Father? I orchestrated the destruction of the Rossi family, stripped Arthur of every offshore account he possessed, and reclaimed the entire forty billion from the Swiss syndicate without firing a single bullet myself. I used your reputation, your grief, and your guns to do what would have taken me twenty years of street wars. I’d call that efficient."
"You used your own flesh and blood," Richard said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You put Noah in that freezing courtyard. He was minutes from death."
"Noah is a Bellacorte," Julian answered smoothly, not a shred of remorse in his aristocratic features. "If he couldn't survive thirty minutes in the snow, he wasn't worthy of inheriting the empire I’m building. But he did survive. He proved his bloodline. Just like you proved that beneath all your talk of retiring and growing old gracefully, you are still the ruthless monster you always were."
Sarah stood up, trembling with pure fury, shielding the boy behind her legs. "You disgust me! I fed that child when he was starving! I bandaged his blisters while you sat in luxury!"
Julian’s gaze shifted on the screen, his green eyes landing on Sarah with chilling disinterest. "Ah, the nanny. Sarah Jenkins. Former pediatric nurse, clean record, zero criminal ties. You were cheap to hire through Arthur’s private clinic, and your maternal instincts were so predictable they were almost algorithmic. You played your part adequately, Sarah. For that, you will receive two million dollars in a blind trust once this matter is resolved. Consider it your severance package."
"Keep your blood money!" Sarah screamed, tears of rage spilling down her cheeks.
Julian ignored her, his eyes locking back onto Richard. "Father, the era of five families sitting in smoky backrooms dividing up New York docks and construction contracts is dead. The Vatican Archive didn't just back my rebirth; they gave me access to the global liquidity network. With the forty billion Arthur accumulated and my international corridors, the Bellacorte name will become a sovereign entity. A shadow state."
"You made a mistake, Julian," Richard said, his tone chillingly calm. "You assumed I was old. You assumed that because you survived an explosion six years ago, you understand how to kill a king."
"I don't need to kill you, Father," Julian replied, leaning forward against the white marble desk, his smile disappearing. "You’re already dead. The world thinks you retired after the Pier 44 raid. The FBI is closing in on Arthur's remaining operations, and by midnight tonight, the Federal Reserve will freeze every domestic account bearing your signature under the Patriot Act. You have no money left in America. No allies left in Europe. All you have is that house, an old soldier with a limp, and a grandson who belongs to me."
"Try to take him," Richard whispered.
"I won't have to," Julian said, his eyes flicking downward toward Noah. "Noah, my little prince. Tell your grandfather what Daddy told you about the silver coin."
Noah reached inside his small wool sweater, pulling out a heavy, antique silver coin suspended on a thin wire around his neck—an artifact none of Richard's guards had noticed beneath his thick clothing.
"The coin opens the cellar, Daddy," Noah recited with chilling obedience.

Richard’s eyes widened in realization. "Viktor, the auxiliary armory!"
Before Viktor could turn, a muffled detonation shook the entire west wing of the estate. The heavy blast doors leading down into the subterranean vault slammed shut with a deafening hydraulic screech, trapping half of Richard's private security team beneath ground level. The lights plunged into complete darkness, and through the tall arched windows of the foyer, the red laser dots of high-powered sniper rifles began dancing across the marble floor.
