Chapter 20 - The lullaby in the dark

Midnight arrived, draping the Long Island estate in an eerie, profound silence. The body had been disposed of, the remaining Capos had sworn blood oaths of loyalty to Noah on their knees, and the entire Bellacorte syndicate had been purged from top to bottom.
On the third floor, inside the expansive master suite, Noah was sleeping soundly in a massive four-poster bed. Sarah lay beside him, her arm draped protectively across his chest, her breathing steady and deep.
Richard sat in the armchair by the bay window, a small glass of whiskey in his hand, watching the snow gently fall across the manicured lawns below. The security monitors on the wall glowed green—all perimeter sensors active, all forty guards at their stations. For the first time in five days, Richard felt a sliver of peace. The monsters had been hunted. The debt had been paid in full.
Suddenly, without a flicker of warning, the entire room plunged into pitch-black darkness.
The green monitor lights snapped off. The hum of the estate’s massive central heating system died instantly. The backup generators did not kick in.
Richard’s instincts flared like raw electricity. He sprang up from the chair, drawing his .45 in the dark, his night vision slowly adjusting to the dim moonlight filtering through the window.
"Sarah," Richard hissed under his breath. "Get Noah to the panic room behind the wardrobe. Now."
Sarah sat up immediately, her voice trembling. "Papa? What happened to the power?"
Before Richard could answer, the battery-operated two-way radio on his belt crackled to life with a blast of static.
"Richard," Viktor’s urgent, strained voice hissed through the speaker. "The main breaker didn't trip from inside. Someone cut the high-voltage underground cables from beyond the gate. The outer guard perimeter is gone. They didn't use guns. They used tactical nerve gas. Everyone at the gate is dead."
Richard’s heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer. "Who is it? The Morettis? The Russians?"
"It’s not a rival family, Boss," Viktor whispered, his breath heavy, the sound of heavy boots crunching on glass audible in the background. "They're wearing private military contractor insignias. Black insignias with a silver crest... Richard, it’s the Rossi consortium. The private army funded by your brother."
Richard’s blood ran completely cold. *His brother.* Arthur Bellacorte, the man Richard had banished to South America thirty years ago, the true architect of the syndicate before their father chose Richard.
At that exact moment, from the hallway directly outside the master bedroom door, the heavy deadbolt clicked unlocked with a slow, agonizing creak.
Noah sat bolt upright in the bed, his eyes wide in the moonlight, clutching the blanket to his throat.

"Grandpa?" the little boy whispered, his voice trembling in sheer terror as a faint, haunting melody began to drift through the crack beneath the door—a woman's voice humming the ancient Sicilian lullaby that only Richard's mother had ever known.
The heavy oak door slowly pushed inward into the dark room.
