Chapter 51 - The Account That Wouldn't DieGabriel had spent forty-eight hours tracing Vesper Clearing's hidden accounts.

When he finally called Claire into the secure operations room, his eyes were bloodshot.
"I found out why Sabine needs the restructuring."
A financial diagram covered the wall.
Dozens of companies in Switzerland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands were connected through a maze of loans and ownership agreements.
At the center sat Vesper Clearing.
Gabriel pointed to one account.
"Two-point-one billion dollars."
Claire leaned forward.
"From the Sovereign reserve?"
"Not directly. These are assets that escaped the freeze because they were placed in separate operating structures years ago."
"Where are they going?"
"Three newly formed holding companies. None has a credible commercial purpose."
Claire followed the transfer sequence.
"If the money moves, tracing it becomes much harder."
"Exactly."
"And Sabine needs the American companies to make the transfers appear legitimate."
Gabriel nodded.
"The forged restructuring resolutions give her a story to tell the banks. She's presenting the transfers as part of a court-approved stabilization plan."
"But there's no court approval."
"Not yet."
Reyes entered carrying a document.
"There will be a hearing Monday morning. We've requested emergency relief, but we need stronger evidence that Sabine personally directed the fraud."
Claire turned toward the wall.
"What about Mother's second key?"
Gabriel opened the archived instructions from the Wall Street vault.
"The Council described it as a second biometric key. That was misleading."
He displayed an old trust agreement.
"The reserve's authorization system was later modified. Your mother created a safeguard separating identification from consent. Your and Elias's biometrics establish identity, but neither of you can authorize a release alone."
"Then how does anyone get access?"
"Through a court-supervised process with independent verification. Evelyn anticipated someone might try to force one child to sign for the other."
Claire felt a cold anger rise inside her.
Her mother had known exactly what Julian was capable of.
Gabriel continued.
"The crescent and star in the photograph correspond to two sealed beneficiary instructions. The original documents were never stored with the Council's digital records."
"Where are they?"
He shook his head.
"We don't know. But we found a clue in an insurance inventory."
He displayed the image of a wooden box.
It was marked with two carved symbols.
A crescent.
And a star.
Claire recognized the box immediately.
"It was in Mother's room."
"Where?"
"The old house near the lake. Arthur sold it after she died."
Reyes looked at her.
"Do you remember the address?"
Claire nodded slowly.
"I remember the house."
May you like
She looked toward the city beyond the window.
"And I remember something hidden beneath the floorboards."
