Chapter 56 - Two Keys, One ChoiceThe federal courthouse was crowded when Claire and Elias arrived.

Outside, journalists shouted questions about the Sovereign Council, the frozen reserve, and the disputed ownership of Thorne Global.

Inside, the twins sat beside each other.

Their mother's original documents lay sealed on the table before them.

Gabriel had spent days working with forensic specialists to confirm their authenticity.

The two documents were beneficiary instructions created by Evelyn Shaw.

They had no magical power to transfer billions.

Their importance was far more practical.

They established that neither child had ever been authorized to surrender the other's interests.

They also proved that the Council's old financial agreements required independent verification of both beneficiaries' consent.

The documents that Sabine relied upon contained no such verification.

Claire's attorney stood.

"Your Honor, the defendants claim that the heirs voluntarily approved the restructuring. We have submitted sworn declarations from both heirs denying those approvals, along with the original instructions showing why unilateral authorization would be invalid."

The judge examined the evidence.

Counsel for Vesper Clearing rose immediately.

"These are historical family documents, not binding commercial agreements."

"Then explain why your client's own archived agreements specifically incorporate them," Claire's attorney replied.

A silence fell over the courtroom.

Elias leaned toward Claire.

"Mother planned for this."

"She tried to."

"She knew Father might use one of us against the other."

Claire looked at him.

"She knew we needed the freedom to say no."

After several hours of testimony, the judge issued an emergency injunction preventing the disputed asset transfers while the ownership and fraud claims were investigated.

The affected operating companies would remain under court-supervised arrangements to preserve lawful payroll and essential obligations.

The decision did not solve every problem.

But it stopped Sabine's immediate plan.

Outside the courtroom, Elias received a call from a former Council officer.

The man sounded frightened.

"Commander, Keller wants you back in Geneva."

"That isn't happening."

"She's authorized an emergency security transfer. Your personal detail has been ordered to collect you."

Elias turned toward the federal agents waiting nearby.

"Tell Sabine I resign."

A stunned silence followed.

"You can't resign from the bloodline."

"Watch me."

He ended the call.

Claire studied him.

"What did you just do?"

Elias slowly removed the black Council signet ring from his finger.

For twenty-four years, the ring had represented everything he had been trained to become.

He held it in his palm.

Then he placed it inside an evidence envelope Reyes offered him.

"I chose my family."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

Elias looked embarrassed.

"Don't cry."

"You've never seen me happy."

He smiled faintly.

"Then I suppose I should get used to it."

She embraced him.

This time, neither hesitated.

Across the street, a television camera captured the moment.

The two heirs Julian Vance had tried to turn into enemies stood together.

Not as rulers.

May you like

Not as weapons.

As brother and sister.
