Chapter 8 - The Reunion in the Shadows and the Bullet That Pierced the Silence

Julian’s chest heaved violently as he gasped for air, his injured shoulder dripping fresh blood onto the cold concrete floor.

He raised the heavy steel pipe with trembling arms, his gaze wild and desperate as he tried to focus through the haze of exhaustion.

“Stay back!” Julian rasped, his voice rough and broken from days of screaming in an underground holding cell.

“I swear to God, whoever sent you... I’ll take you down with me before I let you drag me back down there.”

Dominic did not draw his weapon. Instead, he slowly lifted both hands away from his sides, showing that he was completely unarmed.

He took one slow, deliberate step forward into the dim light cast by the overhead emergency lamps.

“Put the pipe down, little brother,” Dominic said, his voice thick with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in eighteen months.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The steel pipe slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.

He stared at the tall, impeccably tailored man standing before him, as if trying to determine whether he was hallucinating from blood loss.

“Dom...?” Julian whispered, his voice cracking violently as tears carved clean paths through the dirt on his cheeks.

“You’re really here?”

“I’ve been looking for you for eighteen months, you stubborn bastard,” Dominic muttered, closing the distance between them in two swift strides.

Before Julian’s knees could buckle entirely from exhaustion and blood loss, Dominic caught him by his good arm.

He threw Julian’s uninjured arm over his broad shoulder, supporting his brother’s sagging weight against his own tailored suit.

“I told you to always come home,” Dominic said quietly, his eyes burning as he supported the man he had mourned at a gravesite.

“And you made me wait eighteen months to collect on that promise,” Julian let out a wet, breathless laugh that quickly turned into a cough.

“Marcus... Marcus has a mole inside the federal prosecutor's office,” Julian gasped, leaning heavily against his older brother as they moved toward the elevator.

“They aren’t just laundering cartel money through the shipping ports... they’re planning a hostile takeover of—”

CRACK!

A deafening gunshot shattered the echoing silence of the subterranean parking garage, the bullet ricocheting off a concrete pillar inches from Dominic’s head.

“Ambush!” a voice roared through the distant speakers as Thomas Sterling’s tactical team opened fire from the upper catwalks.

Dominic shoved Julian behind the reinforced steel body of a bulletproof sedan, drawing his Sig Sauer in a fraction of a second.

“Get down!” Dominic barked, returning fire into the murky shadows near the ventilation ducts across the garage.

Muzzle flashes sparked in the darkness as two masked gunmen dropped from the overhead pipes, automatic rifles raised toward their position.

“They tracked me from Newark,” Julian coughed, pressing his hand against his bleeding shoulder as bullets chewed into the pavement nearby.

“Marcus didn’t just leave me in that cell... he had a contingency plan to execute me the moment I broke free.”

“Then it’s a good thing I brought an army of my own,” Dominic growled coldly, firing two precise shots that dropped the lead assassin instantly.

Elite security guards poured out of the stairwells behind them, returning heavy suppressive fire that forced the remaining attackers to retreat into the service tunnels.

Thomas Sterling sprinted across the concrete, sliding into cover beside the two Caruso brothers with an assault rifle raised.

“Boss! Are you hit?” Thomas demanded, his eyes darting anxiously between Dominic and the bleeding fugitive beside him.

“I’m fine, but Julian needs immediate medical attention up in the penthouse,” Dominic ordered, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

“Lock down every tunnel, seal the fire exits, and hunt down every last rat in this building before they reach the surface.”

“Already on it,” Thomas replied into his shoulder mic, signaling two tactical guards to hoist Julian carefully onto a rolling medical stretcher.

As they hurried toward the private elevator, Julian reached out with bloodstained fingers and grabbed Dominic’s expensive silk sleeve.

“Dom... listen to me,” Julian whispered urgently, his eyes locked onto his brother’s with terrifying intensity.

“The flash drive with all the financial proof... I hid it inside the lining of Lily’s crib before I was captured.”

“Marcus knows it exists, and he sent someone inside your penthouse to retrieve it right now.”
