Chapter 2 - The Confession Behind Closed Doors and the Ghost of Newark

The heavy soundproofing of the private boardroom muffled the chaos of the Manhattan street below, leaving only the sound of heavy breathing.
Dominic sat at the head of the massive obsidian conference table, his broad shoulders tense as he glared at the trembling young woman seated opposite him.
Baby Lily rested quietly on a velvet chair beside Hannah, chewing happily on a teething ring Dominic's executive assistant had fetched in five seconds flat.
Neither adult paid attention to the child's innocent distraction; the air between them was thick enough to cut with a diamond blade.
"You have exactly two minutes to explain how you got your hands on Julian's personal property, Hannah," Dominic said, his voice dangerously low.
"If you lie to me, or if you omit a single detail, I will ensure you never work another day in this country."
Hannah shuddered, her fingers tightly intertwined in her lap as she stared down at the polished wood table.
"I didn't steal it, Mr. Caruso," she whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed emotion.
"Julian gave it to me himself, the night he supposedly died."
Dominic slammed his open palm against the table, the sharp cracking sound echoing like a gunshot through the empty room.
"Don't lie to my face!" he shouted, his legendary temper finally boiling over.
"I buried my brother eighteen months ago! I saw the forensic reports, I saw the dental records from the wreckage!"
"The body in that car wasn't Julian!" Hannah screamed back, her sudden outburst stunning the billionaire into absolute silence.
Tears streamed freely down her cheeks as she looked up, her eyes burning with a desperate, heartbroken intensity.
"He faked his own death, Mr. Caruso, because staying alive as Julian Caruso was a death sentence for both of us!"
Dominic gripped the edge of the conference table so hard his knuckles turned ghostly white.
"Explain that statement right now," he ordered, leaning forward until his face was inches from hers.
"Who was trying to kill him?"
"Your own board of directors," Hannah replied without a moment's hesitation, dropping a truth bomb that rocked the foundations of his world.
"Julian discovered that Marcus Vance and two other senior partners were systematically embezzling billions from the shipping ports."
"They were laundering cartel money through our overseas subsidiaries, and they were planning to pin the entire federal indictment on Julian."
Dominic narrowed his eyes, his mind racing through corporate ledgers, offshore accounts, and board meetings from the past two years.
Marcus Vance was his most trusted senior vice president, a man who had stood beside him at charity galas and corporate summits.
"Marcus?" Dominic muttered, testing the name on his tongue as a cold realization began to dawn in the back of his mind.
"Marcus had Julian's brakes tampered with on that rainy night outside Newark," Hannah continued, her voice trembling as she relived the nightmare.
"Julian managed to bail out just before the car plunged off the overpass, but he knew they would hunt him down to the ends of the earth."
"He called me from a burner phone ten minutes after the crash, bleeding, terrified, and desperate."
"He told me to take the necklace, take shelter under my maiden name, and hide where nobody would ever look for us."
"He made me promise that if anything ever happened to him, or if he didn't return within a year, I was to bring Lily straight to you."
Dominic leaned back slowly into his leather chair, processing the staggering weight of the deception that had played out right under his nose.
For eighteen months, he had lived with the crushing grief of losing the only family member he truly cared about.
For eighteen months, Marcus Vance had played the role of the loyal friend, comforting him at the gravesite while expanding his own corrupt control.
And all the while, Julian had been hiding in the shadows, leaving behind a baby girl who possessed his unmistakable pale gray eyes.
"If Julian survived the crash," Dominic asked slowly, his voice dropping to a dangerous purr, "where the hell is he now?"
Hannah flinched, looking away as a fresh wave of grief washed over her features.
"Three months ago, he left our safehouse in upstate New York to gather final financial proofs against Marcus and his co-conspirators."
"He said he was going to expose them once and for all so he could come out of hiding and raise Lily in the light."
"He never came back, Mr. Caruso."
Dominic's heart skipped a beat, a cold dread washing over him as he realized the game was far from over.
"Did he contact anyone else before he vanished?"
"No," Hannah shook her head.
"Just me, and he told me that if he missed our weekly check-in, I had to walk straight into your office no matter the personal cost."
"He said you were the only man on earth ruthless enough and powerful enough to destroy Marcus Vance and protect our daughter."
Dominic stood up slowly from his chair, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window as he stared out at the sprawling metropolis below.
His brother was either alive and running for his life, or Marcus Vance had finally finished the job he started eighteen months ago.
Either way, the peaceful facade of the Caruso empire was about to be shattered by an all-out corporate and personal war.
He turned around, his dark eyes locked onto Hannah with a cold, terrifying intensity that left no room for argument.
"From this moment on, you and Lily are no longer maids working in my estate," Dominic stated, his voice commanding and absolute.
"You are moving into my private penthouse suite on the top floor, surrounded by round-the-clock armed security."

"Nobody touches my niece, and nobody touches the people who protected my brother."
Hannah stared at him in stunned silence, realizing that the feared billionaire had just declared war on his own executive board.
