Chapter 4 - Blood, Steel, and the Siege of the Penthouse

The private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse foyer like a death knell.
Hannah stood paralyzed against the nursery door frame, her breath trapped in her lungs as Marcus Vance loomed over her like a executioner.
The polished silver tumbler of scotch in his hand trembled slightly, not from fear, but from the raw malice simmering beneath his calm exterior.
"I'll ask you one more time, my dear," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a smooth, venomous whisper.
"Where did Julian hide the financial backups before he vanished into thin air?"
Hannah swallowed hard, her fingernails digging deep into the wooden door behind her as she forced herself to stand tall.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she lied bravely, her voice only trembling slightly.
"Julian is dead, and I'm just a maid trying to raise my child in peace after your thugs terrorized us for months."
Marcus let out a low, mocking chuckle that sent a shiver straight down her spine.
"You're a remarkably bad liar, Hannah," he murmured, taking another slow step forward until he was standing inches away.
"Julian trusted you with his most precious secrets, just like he trusted that ridiculous Saint Christopher necklace he gave you."
"And now, you've handed those very secrets straight to Dominic by walking into his office."
Before Marcus could reach out and grab her arm, the heavy security door at the end of the hall clicked open with a sharp mechanical hiss.
"Take another step toward her, Marcus, and I'll blow your head clean off your shoulders."
The cold, lethal voice echoed through the expansive hallway like rolling thunder.
Marcus froze instantly, his smug expression shattering as he slowly turned his head toward the entrance.
Dominic Caruso stood in the doorway, his charcoal jacket open, holding a heavy Sig Sauer pistol pointed directly between Marcus's eyes.
Behind him stood Thomas Sterling and three tactical guards armed with submachine guns, completely sealing off any possible escape route.
"Dominic," Marcus gasped, forcing a nervous, tight-lipped smile onto his face as he raised his empty hands slowly into the air.
"My dear boy, what is the meaning of this aggressive display?"
"We're old friends! We've built this empire together over the last decade!"
Dominic walked forward with slow, measured strides, his dark eyes burning with an unholy fire that promised absolute destruction.
"Friendship ended the moment you cut my brother's brake lines in Newark eighteen months ago, Marcus," Dominic said coldly.
"And it turned to ash the second you walked uninvited into my private residence and threatened an innocent woman and my niece."
Marcus's eyes darted frantically toward the elevator doors, calculating his odds and realizing he was trapped in a cage of his own making.
"You have no proof," Marcus spat, his cordial mask slipping completely to reveal a desperate, cornered rat.
"The federal prosecutors are in my pocket, the police reports say Julian died in a tragic accident, and your board will vote you out by tomorrow morning!"
Dominic stopped two feet away from him, his face carved from impenetrable granite.
"I don't need a corrupt federal judge or a bribed board of directors to deal with a traitor," Dominic replied smoothly.
"Thomas, cuff him."
Before Marcus could reach into his tailored jacket for the concealed derringer tucked beneath his armpit, Thomas Sterling lunged forward.
With military precision, Thomas slammed Marcus face-first onto the marble floor, wrenching his arm behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.
"Let me go, you arrogant bastard!" Marcus shrieked, kicking his legs uselessly against the expensive floor tiles.
"You can't do this! I own half the shipping lanes on the East Coast!"
Dominic looked down at the writhing corporate executive with absolute disgust, the same way one might look at a cockroach crawling across a kitchen floor.
"You own nothing, Marcus," Dominic said softly, crouching down until he was eye-level with the disgraced executive.
"Everything you built, everything you stole, and every asset in your name now belongs to the Caruso estate as restitution."
"And as for the rest of your co-conspirators on the board, they'll be joining you in federal custody before sunrise."
He stood up, gesturing to Thomas to drag the sputtering executive away toward the private freight elevator.
"Lock him in the lower level security vault without a phone, without a lawyer, and without food until he tells us where Julian is being held."
As the heavy steel doors closed behind Marcus Vance, the penthouse finally grew quiet again.
Dominic exhaled slowly, letting the adrenaline fade from his veins as he turned around to face Hannah Reed.
The young maid was still leaning against the nursery door, trembling from head to toe as the sheer reality of what had just happened set in.
Dominic walked over slowly, his expression softening just a fraction as he looked at her pale, tear-stained face.
"He's gone," Dominic said quietly, his voice gentle for the first time since they had met.
"You and Lily are safe here now, Hannah."
Hannah looked up into his striking gray eyes, seeing a reflection of the same man who had loved his brother fiercely enough to tear an empire apart.

"Thank you, Mr. Caruso," she whispered, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.
"Please... call me Dominic," he replied softly, glancing past her toward the open door of the nursery where baby Lily was beginning to stir from her nap.
