Chapter 7 - The Descent into the Underbelly of the Financial Tower

The private elevator descended through fifty floors of steel, glass, and concrete with a smooth, silent mechanical hum.

Dominic stood inside the mirrored cabin, his dark eyes fixed on the digital floor numbers ticking downward toward the subterranean levels.

Every single person working in the corporate headquarters downstairs believed Marcus Vance had simply taken an unexpected leave of absence.

They knew nothing of the federal indictments, the offshore laundering accounts, or the private black site discovered across the river in Newark.

When the elevator doors finally slid open with a sharp ping, Dominic stepped out into the sprawling subterranean parking garage of Caruso Tower.

Rows of sleek, bulletproof luxury sedans gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights, guarded by elite tactical operatives in full tactical gear.

Thomas Sterling jogged over immediately, his boots crunching against the polished concrete floor as he saluted his boss.

“The perimeter is locked down tighter than a federal vault, Mr. Caruso,” Thomas reported, handing over a encrypted tactical tablet.

“Traffic cameras along the West Side Highway have flagged a suspicious black van moving erratically off the Holland Tunnel exit.”

Dominic took the tablet, his sharp eyes scanning the grainy traffic feed displaying a battered delivery vehicle weaving through morning traffic.

“Is that him?” Dominic asked, his pulse quickening despite his decades of maintaining icy emotional control.

“We can’t confirm the driver's identity yet from the satellite angle, but the vehicle bypassed three automated toll plates using cloned credentials,” Thomas explained.

“That’s classic Julian,” a bitter, nostalgic smile flickered briefly across Dominic’s lips. “He always hated digital surveillance.”

“If he’s heading straight for the tower, he’ll try to bypass the main security gates by entering through the underground loading dock on Level Three.”

“I’ve already positioned a heavy response team down by the freight elevators,” Thomas assured him, tapping his communication earpiece.

“No one gets past that checkpoint without clearing our biometric scanners or facing immediate, overwhelming force.”

“Stand down the heavy response team,” Dominic ordered suddenly, stunning his chief of security into momentary silence.

“Boss? If that’s an assassin sent by Marcus’s remaining loyalists, a tactical team is the only thing standing between us and a bloodbath,” Thomas protested.

“And if it’s Julian, walking into a hallway filled with assault rifles will trigger a defensive firefight before he even realizes who we are,” Dominic replied coldly.

“I am going down to the loading bay alone.”

“That is absolute madness,” Thomas argued, stepping directly into Dominic’s path. “You cannot walk into a hostile zone unprotected.”

“I am not unprotected, Thomas; I am a brother going to meet his flesh and blood,” Dominic said, pulling back his suit jacket to reveal his sidearm.

“If anyone else tries to breach that loading dock, you have my permission to neutralize them instantly.”

Before Thomas could formulate another objection, Dominic brushed past him and headed down the concrete ramp toward Level Three.

The air in the subterranean loading bay was cold, smelling faintly of exhaust fumes, damp concrete, and old motor oil.

Shadows stretched long and jagged beneath the massive support pillars as delivery trucks idled quietly in the distance.

Dominic kept his footsteps light and silent, his hand resting casually near the grip of his concealed firearm as he scanned the empty bays.

Then, a sharp metallic clatter echoed from behind a row of industrial recycling bins near the corner wall.

Dominic froze, his breath catching in his throat as he slowly turned his head toward the source of the noise.

A figure stumbled out from the shadows, leaning heavily against a concrete pillar for support while clutching a bleeding shoulder.

The man was wearing a torn, soot-stained jacket, his face caked in dried mud and dark arterial blood.

Yet, even beneath the dirt and suffering, the pale gray eyes flecked with gold stared right back across the dim garage.

It was Julian Caruso.

And he was holding a heavy steel pipe like a weapon, ready to strike down the first person who stepped into his path.
