Chapter 18 - The Battle for the Rose Courtyard and the Hallway Siege

The hallway outside the penthouse suite exploded into a chaotic symphony of violence and flashing muzzle fire.

Three black-clad assassins rounded the corner toward the master residential wing, their suppressed submachine guns raised toward the nursery door.

"Drop your weapons!" Dominic shouted, stepping out from the shadows with his Sig Sauer locked onto the lead operative.

Instead of surrendering, the assassins spun around and opened fire, bullets chewing into the mahogany paneling inches from Dominic’s head.

Dominic returned fire with lethal precision, his first shot striking the lead gunman squarely in the chest and dropping him instantly.

Beside him, Julian unleashed a barrage of suppressive fire, forcing the remaining two operatives to scramble behind marble pillars for cover.

"You're out of your depth, Caruso!" one of the mercenaries barked in a thick Eastern European accent, tossing a flash-bang grenade down the hall.

"Close your eyes!" Dominic yelled, grabbing Julian by the tactical vest and pulling him hard against the reinforced wall just as the device detonated.

A blinding white flash and a deafening shockwave shattered the overhead lights, plunging the hallway into disarray.

Through the ringing in his ears, Dominic heard the terrifying sound of a heavy blade slicing through the reinforced lock of the nursery door.

"They're inside!" Julian roared, ignoring the blinding pain in his injured shoulder as he surged forward through the smoke.

He kicked open the nursery door just as one of the assassins raised a silenced pistol over the white-painted crib where baby Lily was sleeping.

"Get away from my daughter!" Julian screamed, tackling the mercenary to the floor with raw, primal fury.

The two men crashed into the bookshelf, sending heavy volumes flying across the carpet as they wrestled for control of the weapon.

Dominic burst into the room a second later, raising his sidearm and firing a single, flawless shot through the assassin's shoulder, neutralizing him instantly.

The third mercenary attempted to flee toward the private balcony, but Thomas Sterling and his tactical backup flooded into the penthouse from the service stairs, cutting off his escape.

"Secure the perimeter!" Thomas shouted, slamming the surviving assassin face-first onto the marble floor and slapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

Silence descended upon the penthouse once again, broken only by the sound of baby Lily waking up and letting out a startled cry from her crib.
