Chapter 3 - The Viper Within the Nest and the Poisoned Ledger

The next morning, the executive suite of Caruso Enterprises felt less like a corporate headquarters and more like a tactical war room.

Dominic sat at his massive mahogany desk, reviewing encrypted financial reports that his private auditing team had worked through the night to compile.

The numbers didn't lie, confirming every word Hannah Reed had spoken about the multi-billion-dollar embezzlement scheme.

Shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands were funneling hundreds of millions through the Newark shipping terminals overseen by Marcus Vance.

For eighteen months, while Dominic believed his brother was dead and gone, Marcus had been quietly consolidating power within the board.

A soft knock echoed at the heavy door before it swung open to reveal Thomas Sterling, Dominic’s fiercely loyal head of corporate security.

The older man stepped inside, locking the door securely behind him before placing a heavy manila folder onto the edge of the desk.

"You were right, boss," Thomas said, his voice grim as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses.

"We traced the offshore accounts linked to the Newark shipping division back to a private holding corporation owned entirely by Marcus Vance."

"Furthermore, our surveillance team picked up encrypted communications between Marcus and federal prosecutor Daniel Thorne."

Dominic didn't look up from the glowing monitor, his fingers tapping a rhythmic, lethal beat against the edge of the polished wood.

"So Marcus didn't just steal from the company and try to kill my brother," Dominic said softly, his voice devoid of any warmth.

"He also bought off the federal prosecutors to ensure any future investigations into the Newark crash were buried permanently."

"Exactly," Thomas confirmed, leaning slightly forward.

"And there's more, Mr. Caruso."

"Our digital forensics unit managed to ping the last known location of the burner phone Julian used before he disappeared three months ago."

Dominic's head snapped up instantly, his dark eyes locking onto his security chief with burning intensity.

"Where?"

"An abandoned industrial warehouse district down by the Newark docks," Thomas replied, sliding a glossy satellite photograph across the desk.

"Coincidentally, that exact property was recently acquired by a front company controlled by Marcus Vance's younger brother."

Dominic stood up slowly, towering over the desk as a terrifying aura of cold fury radiated from his frame.

Marcus hadn't just eliminated Julian; he had kept hunting him down when Julian tried to gather evidence to clear his name.

"Prepare the chopper," Dominic ordered, buttoning his charcoal-gray suit jacket with precise, mechanical movements.

"We are going to pay a little visit to the Newark docks."

"Boss, going down there without notifying local law enforcement is risky," Thomas warned cautiously.

"Marcus has half the police precinct in his pocket, and walking into his territory unarmed is playing right into his hands."

"Who said anything about walking in unarmed?" Dominic replied coldly, pulling a heavy steel key from his vest pocket and unlocking a hidden wall safe.

Inside sat a custom-weighted Sig Sauer pistol alongside a stack of confidential legal documents bearing the original Caruso family seal.

"We aren't going to negotiate with corrupt bureaucrats, Thomas."

"We are going to dismantle Marcus Vance's entire operation piece by piece until he begs us to tell him where my brother is."

Meanwhile, fifty floors above in the private penthouse residence, Hannah Reed paced back and forth across the plush white carpet.

Baby Lily was sleeping peacefully in a custom crib set up in the master guest room, surrounded by plush toys Dominic had ordered within an hour.

Hannah couldn't shake the knot of anxiety twisting tightly in her stomach as she watched the news broadcast playing on the wall-mounted television.

The screen flashed images of a high-profile charity gala hosted by Caruso Enterprises, featuring Marcus Vance smiling warmly beside city officials.

He looked like a benevolent philanthropist, a pillar of society dedicated to charity and community development.

Only Hannah and Dominic knew the rotting corruption hiding beneath that polished, expensive exterior.

A sudden beep echoed from the smart-lock keypad on the private elevator leading directly into the penthouse suite.

Hannah froze in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat as she heard the mechanical whir of the private motor engaging.

Only Dominic and Thomas Sterling had the biometric clearance codes to access this floor without prior authorization.

The heavy elevator doors slid open smoothly, revealing a tall, immaculately dressed man stepping out onto the marble foyer.

It was Marcus Vance himself, wearing a tailored midnight-blue suit and holding a crystal tumbler of scotch in his manicured hand.

His silver hair was combed back neatly, and a warm, grandfatherly smile played across his lips as he spotted Hannah standing by the hallway.

"Well, well, well," Marcus said smoothly, his rich baritone echoing through the silent penthouse.

"So this is where our dear, grieving CEO has been spending his time lately."

"Hiding a pretty young maid and a baby in his private sanctuary instead of attending the board meetings."

Hannah backed away slowly toward the nursery door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Mr. Vance... you shouldn't be up here," she stammered, trying desperately to keep her voice steady.

"Dominic gave strict orders that nobody is allowed on this floor without his personal permission."

Marcus chuckled softly, taking a slow sip of his scotch as he advanced across the marble floor with casual, predatory grace.

"Dominic is a brilliant man, my dear, but he has always been terribly blind to the things happening right beneath his nose."

"Just like his foolish younger brother Julian, who didn't know when to stop digging into matters that didn't concern him."

Hannah's blood ran ice-cold as Marcus stopped just a few feet away, his warm smile vanishing instantly to reveal a pair of chilling, dead eyes.

"I know why you're here, Hannah," Marcus whispered, leaning in close.

May you like

"And more importantly, I know you brought Julian's little bastard child right into the lion's den."

"Where is the flash drive Julian gave you before he disappeared?"
