Chapter 6 - The Reckoning of David Harrison

In the quiet library down the hall, Rachel sat in a wingback chair with Ethan sleeping peacefully upstairs in his bedroom under the watch of a trusted nanny. She was packing her leather handbag, folding a few essential documents into a sleek folder.
The heavy oak door creaked open, and David walked in. He looked older, broken, and utterly defeated. The billionaire CEO looked like a man standing among the smoking ruins of everything he had spent his life building.
"Rachel," David whispered, his voice cracking. He stopped a few feet away, not daring to come any closer. "Please tell me you're not leaving."
Rachel zipped her bag shut and stood up, looking straight into his eyes. Her expression was calm, devoid of the rage she had felt earlier, which made it infinitely more terrifying to David.
"I am leaving, David," Rachel said quietly. "I am taking Ethan and we are staying at my mother's house in the city tonight. Tomorrow, my lawyers will file for divorce and full, unhindered custody."
"No, Rachel, wait! We can fix this! I'm cutting Mason off completely! I'm liquidating his assets, I'm pressing criminal charges against him and Vanessa—they're facing years in federal prison for child abuse and conspiracy!" David pleaded, taking a desperate step forward. "I didn't know what they were doing! You know I love Ethan more than my own life!"
"I know you love him, David. But love without protection is just negligence," Rachel replied steadily. "For five years, I watched how your family treated us behind closed doors. I stayed silent to keep the peace. I let them make us feel small because I thought building a life with you was worth the compromise. But when they tied my baby to a pillar and poured soup over his head while laughing... I realized that staying in this house wasn't preserving a family. It was teaching Ethan that abuse is something you endure for the sake of luxury."

David flinched as if he had been physically struck. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He knew she was right. His obsession with maintaining corporate harmony and pleasing his extended family had blinded him to the monsters living under his own roof.
"Goodbye, David," Rachel said softly, walking past him toward the door. "Your lawyers can contact mine."
