Chapter 29 - The Siege of Vance Tower

The ticking of the clock was no longer a metaphor. It was an execution countdown echoing across two fronts separated by three miles of storm-tossed ocean.
In the belly of the *Leviathan*, Rachel didn't hesitate. She didn't scream, she didn't curse, and she didn't lose herself to panic.
She reversed the golden pistol in her hand and delivered a brutal, calculated strike with the heavy steel frame directly into the side of Victor Sterling’s temple. The Chairman went limp instantly, slumping unconscious across the glass conference table.
"David!" Rachel snapped.
"I'm here!"
"Zip-tie Sterling’s hands and ankles. Drag him. We’re taking him with us."
"What about Mason?" David demanded, glaring down at his whimpering brother on the floor.
Rachel looked at Mason. Her eyes held neither anger nor pity—only absolute, utter void.
"Leave him," Rachel said. "When we reverse the transfer, the Board’s automated security protocols will identify him as the sole unauthorized breach in this room. The ship’s automated lockdown will seal these blast doors permanently. He can spend the rest of his life in the dark with his father's ghost."
"Rachel! No! David! Don't leave me!" Mason shrieked, scrambling on his knees, clutching his broken arm against his chest as the heavy pneumatic doors began to cycle shut. "David! I’m your brother! You can’t leave me here! DAVID!"
David didn't look back. He grabbed the collar of Victor Sterling’s suit, hauling the unconscious Chairman across the threshold just as the five-ton titanium blast door slammed shut with a deafening, final *THUD*.
The digital lock flashed red: *PERMANENT SYSTEM LOCKDOWN ENGAGED.*
Mason’s muffled screams were instantly swallowed by the thick composite walls.
Rachel sprinted down the corridor toward the moon pool, her comms active. "Ethan! Ethan, do you copy?!"
Only static responded.
"Julianna has deployed a local tactical jammer outside the sea cave," David shouted as they hauled Sterling toward the docking bay. "She’s cutting off his external comms while she cycles the sea gate valves!"
They reached the moon pool catwalk. The two diver propulsion units were still tethered to the pontoon.
"We can't swim back against the current carrying an unconscious hostage," David said, panting as he dropped Sterling onto the grating. "It will take fifteen minutes! Ethan will drown!"
Rachel’s eyes locked onto the far side of the moon pool deck.
Resting on a hydraulic launch cradle was the *Vance Specter*—a twin-turbine, enclosed high-speed combat submersible capable of sixty knots underwater. It was the personal escape craft designed specifically for the Board’s executive committee.
"We take their sub," Rachel commanded.
She dragged Sterling into the rear passenger compartment, shoving him into a bucket seat and securing him with five-point racing harnesses. David vaulted into the co-pilot seat, flipping master avionics toggles while Rachel slammed her hand against the ignition sequence.
The twin turbine engines shrieked to life with an ear-splitting turbine whine.
*WARNING: LAUNCH CRADLE LOCKED.*
Rachel drew her sidearm, leaned out the pilot’s hatch, and fired three high-velocity armor-piercing rounds directly into the hydraulic release valve on the bulkhead.
Fluid exploded from the ruptured lines. The launch cradle gave way under the sub’s fifteen-ton weight, dropping the *Vance Specter* violently into the chlorinated pool with a massive splash.
Rachel slammed the twin throttles forward to maximum military overdrive.
The waterjet impellers engaged with feral power, screaming through the open belly hatch of the *Leviathan*. The submersible surged downward into the black ocean, its hydrodynamic hull cutting through the freezing depths at seventy miles per hour, heading straight back toward the rocky cliffs of the Harrison estate.

Meanwhile, inside the sealed subterranean sea cave beneath the mansion, the water level was already rising.
Seawater was cascading through the massive iron emergency intake grates like twin waterfalls of white froth, crashing onto the concrete docks and swirling around Ethan’s sneakers.
Ethan stood atop the *Valkyrie*’s cockpit, his small face illuminated by the amber glow of the sea cave’s emergency strobe lights.
Beside him, Marcus and the two surviving loyal guards were firing their assault rifles into the reinforced steel access door at the top of the concrete stairs. The heavy steel door was buckled, sparking violently where Julianna Vance and her surviving mercenaries were cutting through the electronic hinges with an industrial thermal lance.
"The sea gates are fully open!" Marcus yelled over the roaring torrent of water. "The intake pumps have been reversed! The cave will be completely submerged in three minutes! Master Ethan, you have to put on the reserve dive suit!"
"No," Ethan said, his voice piercing through the chaos with unnatural, crystalline calm.
The five-year-old boy was not looking at the rising water. He was not looking at the sparks flying from the cutting torch at the door.
He had dragged the Vance Cryptographic Archive onto the roof of the boat's cabin. He had spliced a set of heavy jumper cables from the boat’s high-output lithium batteries directly into the archive’s internal quantum bus.
"Master Ethan, what are you doing?!" Marcus shouted in desperation.
"Julianna thinks she’s using the estate’s infrastructure to flood the cave," Ethan said, his fingers flying across his portable terminal with blinding, inhuman speed. "She’s controlling the intake valves through the estate’s secondary automation hub."
"We can't stop the pumps from here!" Marcus cried.
"We don't stop the pumps," Ethan replied, his hazel eyes narrowing with the exact same predatory focus his mother possessed. "We overload the sea gate’s hydraulic pressure tanks. We blow the exterior valves outward."
On Ethan’s screen, a three-dimensional diagram of the coastal cliff face flashed green.
"If I detonate the hydraulic lines," Ethan whispered, "it won't just stop the water. It will collapse the cliff path right beneath her feet."
*CRACK!*
The steel door at the top of the stairs blew inward with a violent shower of sparks.
Julianna Vance stepped into the cavernous chamber, her tailored navy suit soaked with rain, a tactical submachine gun resting in her arms. Behind her stood four heavily armed private military operators, their laser sights cutting through the damp, mist-filled air.
"Step away from the console, little boy," Julianna shouted over the roar of the water, her weapon aimed straight at Ethan’s chest. "The game is over. Your mother is dead at the bottom of the bay, and your precious empire is ours."
Ethan slowly raised his head. He looked at Julianna across the rising pool of black water.
He didn't blink. He didn't cower.
"My mother isn't dead," Ethan said quietly.
"And how could you possibly know that?" Julianna sneered, signaling her men to advance down the slippery concrete stairs.
Ethan pointed toward the submerged entrance of the sea cave.
May you like
"Because she just arrived."
