Chapter 16 - The Cracking Facade

Julian Thorne collapsed onto one of the leather barstools, his bespoke swagger melting into pathetic, sweat-drenched panic. The four private security guards, realizing their employer was hopelessly compromised under federal statutes, slowly raised their hands and stepped back toward the perimeter walls, dissociating themselves from the collapsing empire.
"You don't understand, Rachel," Thorne stammered, pulling a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket to wipe his glistening forehead. "Mason... Mason isn't the man he was ten years ago. Prison broke him, and then it reassembled him into something monstrous. He’s insane. If I give you his location, he will have me executed before the sun rises!"
"And if you don't," Rachel replied without a flicker of sympathy, "the United States government will dismantle you piece by piece, seize every asset your family owns in Europe, and ensure you rot in solitary confinement until your bones turn to dust. Choose your monster, Julian. But choose quickly. You have eight minutes."
Marcus stepped forward, placing a rugged tactical laptop onto the counter. "Type the decryption keys for the Ouroboros server, Thorne. Now."
Thorne swallowed hard, his trembling fingers hovering over the mechanical keyboard. He looked up at Rachel, searching for a trace of the woman who had cried on a patio ten years ago while clutching her traumatized son. He found none. He found only the architect of his total destruction.
"He... he’s not in the city," Thorne confessed, his voice breaking. "The medical release was arranged through Caldwell, but Mason never went to a hospital. He bought an abandoned industrial shipping terminal on the New Jersey waterfront—Pier 42 in Bayonne. He’s operating from a converted dry-dock control center."
"Why the waterfront?" Marcus demanded, cross-referencing satellite maps on his handheld unit.
"Because the trust assets aren't all electronic," Thorne whispered, his eyes darting frantically. "Old man Vance... he hoarded physical bearer bonds and raw diamonds in a maritime vault beneath the pier before the federal freezes. Mason needs the biometric scan from Ethan to unlock the pneumatic safe. He has an offshore cargo freighter registered under a Liberian flag anchored three miles off the coast. Once he gets the boy's retina, he boards the freighter and vanishes into international waters where no extradition treaty can touch him!"
Rachel felt a cold fury settle into her bones. Pier 42. It was less than twenty-five miles from where Ethan was currently sequestered.
"And who is the insider at our estate?" Rachel asked, her tone dangerously soft. "The one who promised to drop the southern gate security at 2:00 AM?"
Thorne hesitated. Marcus drew his sidearm with terrifying, mechanical smoothness, resting the cold muzzle against Thorne’s temple.
"His name is Thomas," Thorne gasped, squeezing his eyes shut. "Thomas Miller. The assistant head of groundskeeping. Mason paid off his gambling debts five months ago."
Rachel didn't waste another second. She turned on her heel, her trench coat flaring behind her. "Marcus, coordinate with the Marshal. Take Thorne into federal custody under seal. No phone calls. No leaks."

"On it," Marcus replied, already speaking into his earpiece. "What about the estate?"
"I’m calling Ethan and David right now," Rachel said, exiting into the elevator foyer. "Thomas Miller is about to walk into an ambush."
