Chapter 1 - "The laughter was the first thing Rachel heard when she opened the patio door.

"The laughter was the first thing Rachel heard when she opened the patio door.
Then she saw her five-year-old son.
Ethan was tied to a white patio column with a satin ribbon, his little shoulders shaking as tears streamed down his face. Soup dripped from his hair and soaked the front of his party shirt while adults stood around him holding up their phones.
Some of them were actually laughing.
His uncle Mason stood only a few feet away, wearing the satisfied smile of someone who believed nobody would dare challenge him.
Beside him, Mason’s wife still held the empty soup plate.
Rachel stopped in the doorway.
For one terrifying second, she couldn’t move.
Then Ethan looked up.
“Mommy…”
That single word changed everything.
Rachel crossed the patio so quickly that several guests lowered their phones.
Mason turned toward her with a smug expression, almost as if he expected her to stay quiet.
He never finished whatever he was about to say.
Rachel drove her foot straight into his chest.
Mason flew backward into the buffet table.
Plates crashed.
Glasses shattered.
Food scattered across the patio as the entire table collapsed beneath him.
The laughter disappeared instantly.
But Rachel wasn’t looking at the wreckage.
She was looking at her son.
And then Mason’s wife came charging toward her with one hand raised.
Rachel turned just in time.
What happened in the next few seconds made every person at that party stop laughing—and made the videos they had been recording far more important than any of them realized.
Because Rachel had only seen what they did to Ethan outside.

She still didn’t know why they had done it.
And she definitely didn’t know what one guest’s phone had captured before she walked through that door…
