Chapter 14 - The Lioness Unchained

The revelation did not provoke terror in Rachel; it provoked an ancient, lethal calculation. She looked at her son, seeing in him not the fragile child who once hid behind her skirt, but a young man of extraordinary intellect and unyielding resolve.
"Ethan," Rachel said, walking over and placing her hands squarely upon his shoulders. "You are never to leave this perimeter without Marcus and three armored units. Do you understand me?"
"Mom, they’re tracking my phone's cellular signature," Ethan replied, showing her the telemetry on his screen. "That’s how they got the photograph at the gala. They tapped the municipal cell tower three miles out. If I stay in one place, they’ll bring the fight here, to the estate, where our staff and guests could be caught in the crossfire."
David drew himself up to his full height, his eyes reflecting the cold fire that had made him one of the most formidable corporate litigators in the country. "He’s right, Rachel. We cannot play defense against Mason Vance. Mason thrives in the shadows, fighting by proxy. We take the initiative tonight."
"How?" Evelyn asked anxiously. "The proxy vote is in twelve hours. The SEC won't freeze the shares without a court order, and Judge Caldwell—the one who signed Mason’s medical release—is sitting on the emergency injunction bench!"
"Then we don't go to Judge Caldwell," Rachel said, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper. "We go to the man pulling his strings. Julian Thorne arrived in the city yesterday. Marcus tracked his private Gulfstream to the executive airfield in Teterboro. Where is Thorne staying tonight?"
David checked his phone. "The penthouse suite at the St. Regis. Guarded by private security contractors."
"Private contractors work for money," Rachel said, walking to the antique desk and pulling open a concealed floor safe. From within, she retrieved a sleek, black titanium thumb drive. "Mason forgot that ten years ago, when I seized the servers from his downtown office, I didn't hand everything over to the Department of Justice. I held back the black ledger—the one documenting Julian Thorne’s offshore kickbacks, his illicit payoffs to European maritime regulators, and the identities of every corrupt official on his payroll."
"You kept leverage," David said, a ghost of an admiring smile touching his lips despite the dire circumstances.
"I kept an insurance policy to protect my child," Rachel replied without an ounce of apology. "Mason thinks I am an advocate who only knows how to give speeches in courtyards. He has forgotten who I became the day he put his hands on my son."
She looked at David. "You take the financial front. Go to the federal courthouse with Evelyn and file the emergency petition directly with the Chief Justice of the Circuit Court, bypassing Caldwell. Ethan, you remain here with Marcus in the fortified communications bunker below the carriage house. You monitor every frequency and track Thorne’s digital footprint."

"And where are you going, Mom?" Ethan asked, his dark eyes wide with sudden concern.
Rachel slipped the titanium drive into her jacket. "I am going to pay Julian Thorne a visit. It's time to remind Mason Vance’s consigliere what happens when you threaten a mother."
