Chapter 34 - The Shattered Sanctuary

The armor-piercing incendiary round struck the blasting cap buried beneath the fountain's stone lip.

The world vanished into a deafening wall of orange fire and shattering stone.

The explosion blew inward and downward, the concussive shockwave tearing through the rotunda’s structural columns. The marble floor buckled like thin ice, splitting open as the aviation fuel within the subterranean cisterns ignited in a secondary, subterranean inferno. A geyser of flame erupted through the center of the grand hall, sending shockwaves that blew the remaining floor-to-ceiling windows into a million glittering fragments out over the cliffside.

Rachel slammed backward onto the upper gallery carpet, wrapping her entire body around Leo like an iron shell. The roar of the blast rattled her teeth, heat washing over her back, scorching her coat, but the boy remained unharmed beneath her chest.

"Mama!" Leo screamed through the roar, his hands clutching her shirt.

"I’ve got you! I have you, baby!" Rachel yelled, scrambling to her feet amid the swirling smoke.

Across the shattered gallery, Ethan was coughing violently, his tactical pack smoking, but he was already on his feet, rifle raised. David Harrison had taken a spray of marble shrapnel across his left arm, blood soaking his sleeve, but his eyes were blazing with fierce, desperate adrenaline.

Down below, the center staircase had completely collapsed into a fiery chasm. Two of Julian's commandos had been swallowed by the initial blast, crushed under falling masonry. Three others were laying suppressive fire blindly through the smoke, their bullets tearing through the upper banisters.

Julian himself had been thrown back toward the grand entrance doors by the concussive wave. He was already rising, his face smudged with soot, his charcoal coat torn, his eyes no longer serene, but burning with a monstrous, predatory fury.

"KILL THEM ALL!" Julian’s voice tore through the thunder of the fire. "BRING ME THE CHILD ALIVE! SHOOT THE REST!"

"East fire escape! NOW!" Rachel shouted, firing a controlled three-round burst over the smoking balustrade that dropped one of the advancing operatives scrambling up the remaining wall fixtures.

David took point, ignoring the blood running down his arm, his submachine gun hammering into the smoke to suppress the enemy's advance. Ethan threw two tactical flash-bangs and a smoke canister down into the hole, creating a blinding, impenetrable fog of white phosphorus that masked their retreat down the east wing corridor.

They sprinted through the private quarters, the floor vibrating beneath them as the structural integrity of Vance Manor began to fail. Behind them, through the smoke, Rachel could hear the heavy boot-steps of Julian's elite guard pursuing them with relentless speed.

"The balcony on the east cliff!" Ethan yelled, panting heavily. "The service winch! We set up the high-line rig earlier for emergency extraction!"

They burst through the heavy oak doors of the master bedchamber out onto the exterior stone balcony jutting out over the sheer drop of Blackwood Ridge. Below them, three hundred feet down, the midnight ocean was a cauldron of frothing black and white waves smashing against the jagged teeth of the coastal shoals.

Strung from the balcony’s reinforced iron anchor-point was a heavy carbon-fiber zip-line, angling steeply down toward a hidden sea grotto half a mile south along the shoreline, where Rachel’s secondary extraction vessel—a low-profile, radar-absorbent Willard tactical RIB—was moored.

"Ethan, rig the harness!" Rachel ordered, kneeling down on the rain-swept stone. She checked Leo's straps, ensuring the child was locked tight against her chest, facing inward, his face shielded by her ballistic collar. "Leo, listen to me. We are going to fly. You need to keep your eyes shut, hold onto my neck as tight as you can, and do not let go. Do you trust me?"

Leo looked into her fierce, soot-stained face. He saw no fear in her eyes—only an ocean of unstoppable motherly resolve.

The five-year-old nodded firmly, burying his small hands into the fabric of her tactical vest. "I trust you, Mama."

"Incoming!" David roared, spinning around as the bedroom doors were kicked off their hinges.

Two Apollyon commandos appeared in the doorway, their carbines flashing. David fired back, taking one through the neck, but a burst of 300 Blackout caught David in the shoulder and side. The old man gasped, stumbling back against the balcony railing, his weapon clattering to the flagstones.

"David!" Rachel screamed.

"Go! GO, RACHEL!" David shouted, his face pale with agony, pulling a secondary fragmentation grenade from his belt and thumbing the pin. "I lived eighty years under Arthur's shadow! I won't let his bloodline die to that monster! GET THE BOY OUT!"

Above them, through the rain, the spotlight of a Black Hawk helicopter suddenly swung over the cliff, illuminating the balcony in blinding white illumination. The side door of the helicopter slid open, revealing a mounted mini-gun beginning to spin.

Ethan hooked Rachel’s tandem carabiner into the high-line trolley with a vicious snap. "Locked! GO!"

Rachel didn't hesitate. She stepped onto the stone railing, kicked off with all her strength, and launched herself into the void.
