Chapter 15 - The Viper’s Parlor

Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse suite at the St. Regis Hotel, casting distorted streaks of neon light across the white marble floors. Julian Thorne, immaculate in a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit, stood before a polished glass bar, swirling three fingers of twenty-five-year-old single malt scotch.

Across the room, four heavily built men in tailored suits stood with arms folded, their jackets bulging slightly over holstered semi-automatic pistols.

"Everything is positioned, Julian," one of the men said, checking a tactical tablet. "The offshore funds clear escrow at 8:00 AM. The proxy vote will be rubber-stamped. David Harrison won't even have standing to object before the board."

"And the boy?" Thorne asked, his voice smooth, cultured, and devoid of warmth.

"The contracts are out. The trackers caught his signal at the estate earlier. Once the board removes David Harrison, the perimeter security at the estate will be compromised from within. Our man on their payroll will shut down the southern gate cameras at 2:00 AM."

Thorne smiled, raising his glass toward his reflection in the glass. "To Mason. A man of singular vengeance."

A sudden, muted chime sounded from the suite's private elevator foyer. Thorne frowned, lowering his glass. "Are we expecting room service?"

"No," the lead security guard answered, his hand instinctively sliding inside his jacket. "Nobody comes up without clearance from the lobby."

The elevator doors slid open with a whisper.

Stepping through the threshold was not a delivery cart, nor an assassin in tactical gear. It was Rachel Harrison.

She wore a dark, tailored trench coat, her hair swept back, her posture commanding and absolute. Behind her stood two men: Marcus, towering and silent, holding an electronic frequency jammer that rendered all radio communication in the suite instantly dead, and a uniformed Deputy United States Marshal holding a sealed federal envelope.

The four private security guards reacted instantly, reaching for their weapons.

"I wouldn't touch those firearms if you value your freedom," the Deputy Marshal announced, his voice booming with authority. "Federal warrant for the inspection of unregistered foreign communications equipment. Step back and put your hands flat on the bar!"

The guards hesitated, looking at Thorne. Thorne’s aristocratic composure fractured for a fraction of a second before he recovered, an oily smirk spreading across his lips.

"Rachel," Thorne drawled, waving his men to stand down. "To what do I owe the dramatic entrance? If this is about the proxy vote tomorrow, I assure you, everything the Ouroboros Group has done is strictly within the boundaries of international corporate law."

Rachel walked slowly into the center of the suite, her heels clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble. She stopped five feet from Thorne, her gaze cutting through him like an obsidian blade.

"You always were an arrogant bureaucrat, Julian," Rachel said quietly. "You hide behind corporate charters and Swiss accounts while facilitating the assassination of a fifteen-year-old child."

"Assassination? What an uncivilized accusation," Thorne sneered, taking a sip of his scotch. "I am an attorney representing an investment vehicle. Whatever personal grievances Mason Vance holds against your family have nothing to do with my legal duties."

Rachel reached into her pocket, produced the black titanium drive, and set it down on the glass bar with a sharp, echoing *clack*.

"Do you recognize this, Julian?"

Thorne’s eyes flicked to the drive. A subtle, involuntary twitch began beneath his left eyelid. "Trinkets don't intimidate me."

"This drive contains the unredacted ledgers from the Bank of Credit and Commerce in Geneva, dated twelve years ago," Rachel stated, her voice dropping into a register of chilling precision. "It details the wire transfers you authorized from the human trafficking syndicates in Eastern Europe into Mason’s private shell companies. It details the offshore bribes paid to maritime port authorities. And most importantly, it contains the audio recording of you, Julian, giving the green light to sabotage the cargo vessel *The Northern Star* to collect sixty million dollars in fraudulent maritime insurance."

Thorne’s face lost every shred of color. The scotch glass slipped from his fingers, shattering violently against the marble floor, splashing golden liquor across his polished shoes.

"That... that was destroyed," Thorne whispered, his throat suddenly bone-dry. "Mason said he burned the servers."

"Mason lied to you," Rachel said coldly. "He used you as a shield then, and he is using you as a sacrificial lamb now. That warrant the Marshal holds isn't just for an inspection. It’s an immediate federal seizure order for your passport, your assets, and your person as a material witness in an ongoing international terror-finance investigation."

May you like

Rachel took one step closer, invading Thorne’s personal space until he could see the cold, unforgiving fire burning in her eyes.

"You have exactly ten minutes to give me Mason Vance's physical location," Rachel whispered. "Or I hand this drive to the Marshal, call a press conference in the lobby, and watch you spend the rest of your natural life in ADX Florence."
