Chapter 5 - The Vow To Protect The Innocent Bloodline

The heavy silence that immediately followed the hostile phone call was remarkably thick,

settling over the luxurious penthouse like a deeply suffocating blanket of heavy snow.

I pulled the soft cashmere blanket tighter around my trembling shoulders,

feeling the sudden and sharp drop in the room's emotional temperature.

Marcus quietly dismissed the rest of the tactical security team with a subtle wave of his hand,

leaving only the three of us alone in the massive and heavily fortified living space.

Adrian walked slowly toward the velvet sofa where I was resting,

his heavy footsteps making absolutely no sound on the expensive and thick Persian rug.

He knelt down gracefully beside me,

his massive frame surprisingly gentle as he rested his forearms carefully on the edge of the cushions.

"I am so sorry you had to hear that garbage,

Claire,"

he murmured softly,

his dark eyes filled with deep regret and overwhelming,

protective tenderness.

I reached out from beneath the warm blanket,

brushing my fingers gently against the slight stubble forming along his strong jawline.

"I am not afraid of her empty threats,"

I reassured him quietly,

forcing a brave and supportive smile onto my pale and exhausted face.

"But we need to talk about how Richard Cross knew the exact moment to strike,"

I continued seriously,

my mind returning to the dangerous secrets I had uncovered during my time in hiding.

Marcus stepped closer to the seating area,

his expression hardening into a mask of pure,

professional focus and intense suspicion.

"What exactly do you mean by that,

Claire,"

Marcus asked respectfully,

his sharp security instincts instantly flaring to life at the subtle hint of new intelligence.

I took a deep and steadying breath,

organizing my chaotic thoughts before dropping the final,

devastating piece of the puzzle.

"When I was serving drinks at their secret planning meeting,"

I explained carefully,

making sure to recall every single detail with absolute clarity and precision,

"Richard mentioned that he had highly reliable inside information regarding your personal security protocols."

Adrian's posture became completely rigid,

the muscles in his broad back bunching tightly with sudden and explosive tension.

"He specifically said that someone in your inner circle guaranteed the ceremonial cup would not be thoroughly checked,"

I revealed,

watching as the devastating realization slowly dawned on both of their faces.

"There is a mole,"

Marcus stated flatly,

the horrifying implication hanging heavily in the quiet and tense air of the penthouse.

"Someone deeply embedded in our organization actively helped them plan this assassination,"

Marcus concluded,

his hand instinctively dropping to rest heavily on the weapon holstered at his side.

Adrian closed his eyes for a long moment,

taking a slow and deeply controlled breath to suppress the rising tide of his immense fury.

When he finally opened his eyes again,

the terrifying and legendary Chicago Wolf was fully and undeniably present.

"Lock down the entire compound immediately,"

Adrian ordered with absolute and chilling authority,

his voice ringing with undeniable command and lethal purpose.

"No one enters or leaves this building without my direct and personal authorization,"

he instructed Marcus,

"and begin a complete and ruthless audit of every single captain in our organization."

Marcus nodded sharply and turned away rapidly,

already barking urgent and strict orders into his encrypted communication device.

Adrian turned his full and intense attention back to me,

his large hands gently framing my face with incredible and unexpected tenderness.

"I swear on my own life,

Claire,"

he promised fiercely,

his forehead pressing deeply and intimately against mine,

"I will find whoever betrayed us,

and I will make them regret the day they were born."

He moved one hand slowly down to rest firmly over our unborn child.

May you like

"No one will ever harm our bloodline,"

he vowed softly.
